I feel like I've had every type of diabetes! I was first diagnosed as gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my daugheter, Chloe, 4 yrs ago. They put me on MDI until I had her. Couple years flew by and I kind of forgot about the whole diabetes thing. Then about a year ago I started getting yeast infections that wouldn't go away thats when they diagnosed me as Type 2. They put me on metformin for a couple months but it wasn't helping. I ended up losing 50 pounds in a few months, my yeast infections were still there, and I felt like total crap my numbers were over 500 sometimes the meter would just say "HI" I'm really surprised I didn't end up in the hospital! So after a couple months the dr. FINALLY said hey lets put you on MDI! Which it has helped quite a bit. I do get more lows and I still do get some highs but not as bad as it was. My A1C has gone from 16 to 12 now. Still high but getting better. So now I am also seeing a CDE and she thinks I've been Type 1 my whole life which does make sense! As I look back at my life I used to wet the bed till I was 16 which might have been a cause, when my daughter was born she was only 5 pounds and I've heard that type 1's have lower birthweight babies. So as of now I guess I'm a type 1. I also have applied for the insulin pump. Because I am on Medicaid I had to prove to them that I am doing MDI for 6 months and testing 4 times a day also. So 6 months is almost here, on May 14th I officially start my insulin pump and I am super excited! I really don't like shots at all so this is like the prayer I've been waiting for. So there you have it my life story. Hope you enjoyed.
Hi Shayla. Having diabetes all your life -- undiagnosed and untreated -- is terrible. I'm sure you're going to love your pump, at least I do.
I'm convinced that I've had Celiac Disease all my life, finally "diagnosed" when my diabetes was diagnosed. I'm the one that dx'd it; my doctors agree so it's in my medical records.
Your life story is very interesting!
Thank you :) I'm kinda nervous about learning everything about the pump though! Hope I learn fast lol
I now have a MM522, but started on a 508. My first training session was with a trainer from Medtonics and my CDE, both excellent, and I continue to have help from my CDE. I'm on MDI part time, and with all the knowledge from using the pump, the MDI works out well also. What kind of pump are you getting?
Same as you I think
? Type 1 usually have very LARGE babies.

Hi Shayla: Your story is actually a very common one here on TuDiabetes! For many women, pregnancy is "the straw that broke the camel's back" and pushes them over the edge in developing Type 1 diabetes. Sadly, the medical community in the U.S. has been so slow to recognize this, and usually women are misdiagnosed as having Type 2 diabetes, as you were. I wrote a blog on autoimmune gestational diabetes that I hope you will find useful. That is great that you are getting a pump--I really think it is the best way to go, and typically pump trainers are amazingly helpful. Best of luck to you, let us know how things go!
Hi Shayla, glad you finally seem to have an accurate diagnosis! The pump is a wonderful tool, and it does have a steep learning curve in the beginning. All worth it :) Keep us posted!
Melitta I loved that blog it makes me feel not so alone about which diagnosis I had
