Was great!! I was very, very nervous that my Diabetes would prevent me from enjoying my trip (this was the first trip on my own, without my boyfriend to help me with everything since I’ve been diagnosed with Type 1), and would impede my activities and everything, but it wasn’t that bad. I originally was supposed to start my Omnipod the day before the trip, but my CDE didn’t want to risk anything bad happening or me not being able to come in to adjust things while I was gone so my new training isn’t until May 7. Bummer! But I’m glad everything went fine during the trip.
One thing I did notice was overnight lows HOURS later after drinking alcohol. The first night I was there I had a margarita and a vodka sugar free redbull, and I woke up with a 54. I went to bed in the 180’s so I did not anticipate it to go that low, especially since “Think Like a Pancreas” says that one drink will lower your blood sugar 2 hours later. So I set my alarm to go off in the middle of the night to check it and make sure it wasn’t low. It was fine, in the 120’s so I thought the trouble was gone. No, it lowered even more way past 4 hours later. That is really weird! So I made sure I snacked before bed the other 2 nights and I was fine, but I don’t like going to bed with high blood sugar because of A1C’s but oh well.
Another thing I hated was excusing myself all the time at restaurants and bars to go to the bathroom and take insulin/check my blood sugar! I don’t have to deal with it that much at home because I usually make my own food/check at home because I like to know how many carbs are in the food I prepare. It was quite annoying and I can’t wait to get on my pump so I don’t have to go away to take shots anymore!
