Hello all-
My daughter is in 8th grade and has a big “Exhibition” project due in May. In all reality it’s bigger than most projects I did in college! How times have changed.
She attends a Technology oriented Magnet Middle school and the assignment was to focus on a piece of technology. Amazing girl that she is, she chose to study Insulin Pump Therapy. (I’m honored!)
I’m looking to you all… my TuDiabetes family for some help. Please send links to sites that you know of that discuss Insulin Pump Therapy. She is getting some questions that I can answer as a user of Minimed products for 10+ years, but she needs a much broader spectrum. One question she’s having trouble researching is: Who invented/developed it? Develop a brief biography for each person involved. I never thought about who developed the first insulin pump.
Any and ALL help is welcomed!!! thank you all.
Erin
p.s. it’s now been 10 weeks today that I am smoke free : )
Other questions…
• How did it evolve into how it is used today? What changes have occurred over time?
• How long have insulin pumps been available?
• Why was it necessary for this technology to be created?
• What are the positive impacts of it? Who benefits from it? (i.e. saves lives)
• Will it ever be replaced by something new? If so, with what? If not, how come?
Another part that we need help with is this…· What materials/resources are needed/used? = Relating to Insulin Pump Therapy. Again, I know how to answer this relating to a Minimed 522, anyone else have ideas you can share???
Can anyone think of any ideas? We’ve researched Minimed.com and a number of sites, but she has a preliminary paper due tomorrow and we’re stuck on some of these answers.
This was the very first pmp in 1978! someone posted this photo on here a few months ago. Here is a link to the discussion, the person who posted it might have more useful info for you.
Thank you ALL SO much… did you ever have “one of those days?” TODAY is ONE OF THOSE DAYS. I knew, I just knew that my diabetes family could help me and I can’t thank you enough!!!
Thank you Gordie, she has. I think the problem she’s facing now is the overwhelming amount of information and knowing that not everything she finds will be 100% accurate. Hence my interest in reaching out to the people here. We know it, we live it, but the more hands in the pot on this one… the better. Thanks!
Well I do not all the answers, but I know part of the story. My mom was a control subject for a pump trail at Indiana University, in 1973. I saw one of the original pumps, it was os big it had to be pushed on a cart. in those days it was called the artificial automated islet replacement machine A-AIRM. The guy I saw it who had it called his Frank the Crank LOL
I have to say thank you again! Especially to Cody, Cara, Kathy, Kim, Gordie, Rick and Jaimie : )
Haley wrote a very nice 5 page research essay on Insulin Pump Therapy. She had been working on this for a few weeks, but like all 13 year olds… last minute … she realized she was missing some info. You guys saved the day and helped fill in some missing pieces that were much needed!
I may reach out to everyone again as this is an ongoing project. The History essay is due Monday. Next…I don’t know, but I do know come May she has to do an oral presentation with a video (she is going to tape my CDE showing how to properly set up an infusion site - she is diabetic), a creative presentation (tri-fold posterboard), and a research paper. SO MUCH work for an 8th grader!
