Hello, it’s been awhile since I have posted here. I have just switched jobs, and with my new job I obviously haven’t met my deductible. It would really help !e out if I could hold off making a full order until 2017. I had enough insulin to last me until now, but I will be on a business trip starting January 1st and going until the 16th. Basically I need the best short term plan to get a Humalog replacement in the US.
I understand there is no magic answer for this, and I have researched these forums. Seems the best answer is getting regular from Walmart. I have enough Lantus to last, so I just need a mealtime insulin replacement. If regular is the best options, does anyone have any tips for transitioning other than take it a half hour before meals?
If you need an inexpensive replacement for Humalog, the Walmart Regular is a reasonable substitute. It’s now been 20 years since I’ve used it. It’s onset, peak and duration are all longer than Humalog. Make sure you read the package insert to understand the difference. A 30-minute pre-bolus time may not be enough, you’ll need to experiment. You’ll also need to be more careful 4-6 hours after dosing since the tail of insulin action might surprise you.
Ask your doctor for samples! My endocrine has always provided Levemir and Novolog for “pump failure” back-up when I am traveling (or fighting with insurance for pump supply coverage–rare, but happens). Docs frequently get freebies from drug sales folk, often use them when switching meds to gauge effect before writing a $$$ prescription.
As Terry says, that 30-minute lead time may or may not work for you. For me, it takes 40. You’ll need to test it on yourself to determine your own magic number. Aside from that, it should get you through.
If you can afford about 115 for a 30d supply of Afrezza, you can get that with mfg savings card, or possibly free from your Dr as a sample.
Afrezza is inhaled fast acting insulin, which I’ve been using for last 2 years. The dosing is much different, and it acts very fast, so helpful if you check BG frequently or have CGMS when starting.
Beg for samples. I went for my 3 month endo visit yesterday and he gave me his usual 2 bottles of Humalog. I recently had a pump slight malfunction that scared me to death (new pump is arriving today) and so I brought up the fact that I did not have a disaster plan and he gave me also a Tresiba pen.
