Hi there! I am new here but not to diabetes. I’ve been Type 1 for 20 years now, but only recently have I felt comfortable talking about it and dealing with it in a proactive manner. I’ve posted my diagnosis / history on my blog if you’re interested.
I’ve finally decided that I need to go on the pump; I’m trying to decide between the Omnipod and the Animas Ping, so any feedback you may have on that would be great.
Oh, my user name (Lazy Pancreas) is a joke I’ve made from time to time about how I think we should change the name of diabetes to lazy pancreas (like lazy eye).
Karen
Hi Karen, I am also new to this site. I have only had T1 for 5 years and I have been on the omni pod for almost 3 years. I lead an active life i.e tri athlete. I chose omni pod because it doesn’t have any tubes and I can swim with it. I read a couple of posts on this site about omni pod and they mentioned how often they fail. I have had maybe 10 failures in 3 years. At first I didn’t know to pinch up the skin when inserting the tube, so most failed then. In the last year I have probably had 3 fail before the three days of wearing it are up. I workout daily here in Florida so I sweat a lot, and I have had a couple lost due to sweat, but usually it’s not a problem. I always put it on at night and bolas right afterwards, and I don’t prep my skin, I just make sure I’m freshly clean. In other words, it is really reliable. The main draw back that I have is that the pdm doesn’t look very cool. I think it is bulky. I wish some of the Apple engineers would re-work it!
welcome! lazy pancreas…lol
Welcome Karen!!! I, myself use the miniMed so I have nothing to add here about the other pumps. I’ve had Type 1 for almost 37 years now and a pump has helped me bunches! GOOD LUCK!
Love your user name of Lazy Pancreas - because that what we all have!!!
I tried out Medtronic (522) and Animas pump before taking the plunge. I went with the Animas (2020 - no PDM just the plain Jane version - hope your name isn’t Jane - as I don’t mean any offense here). Choice it due to being waterproof - I can read the screen - and it was easier to use I found compared to Medtronic (I’m not a hi techie gal). If the Omnipod was available in Canada, I would have tried that as well (one day - it will be here - tap, tap, tap).
Oh - and I’ve been on a pump break since April - just for the heck of it (I’m a glutton for punishment). So far, I’m doing as well on MDI (multiple doseage injections) as I did with my pump aka Salvador Dali. I just find MDI makes me “think” more about diabetes (remember to take my basal shot - aka Levemir/Lantus every 12 hours - duh - I’ve forgotten a few times). With the pump, if programming is set up perfect, you just go with the flow! I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to use the pump, since I was against it in the beginning, but now think it has it’s advantages, but luckily I do well with both methods of controlling my diabetes … so far.
