New meter idea 3 in 1

While I can’t remember the specifics of their reasoning, the MDs do seem to love their Keto-Diastix strips. They sent me a bottle of 100 strips without bothering to ask me if I was ever going to use them. :frowning: Later, when I asked why they did that, the reasoning was something about if I ever “call in” about high BGs when I’m sick they’d want me to check for ketones.

Huh? I forget why they felt knowing about ketones in my urine might be important. I also have no idea why they would think I would ever bother to “call in” just because my BG was high from the flu? Why would I go to the trouble over something so predictable?

Of course, they also didn’t bother to ask when they sent me a vial of Lantus … which is still unopened and no doubt will expire before it is ever used.

They also sent me a box of syringes without talking to me about it first. Now, I actually think keeping syringes around is a “good thing”. But again, they didn’t talk to me, they just prescribed and sent them.

It wasn’t until months later that I actually looked closely enough to realize they had sent me 100 unit syringes. :rage: If they had bothered to ask me I would have requested 30 unit, lo-dose syringes with the 1/2 unit graditions. For me the 100 unit syringes are both pointlessly too big and a general PITA to use … for injecting insulin.

However, I did eventually stumble across an alternate use for them. I found they can be useful as a way to siphon out liquid Skin Tac from the large bottle it comes in. I can then meter out the amount to apply without messing about with the original bottle the stuff comes in, possibly spilling or contaminating it. :smirk:

I haven’t used mine yet, but having been through dka and in the icu etc. it is something I want to have. If my bg were high for hours and I was getting dka symptoms I could test and see if I also had high ketones and needed to get to an er. I don’t test for ketones on a regular basis.

big fan of acapella music keytones could work for a name

no i look at both sites and only the canadian neo can test blood ketones i wonder if anyone has a canadian one they could review i saw where you could get one for free

Yepper! This was one of the things which was ranted about at some length in the review of the US version of this meter which @YogaO posted earlier. I’ve reposted the link to the review below.
Abbott’s New Precision Neo Meter Lacks Features, Aims to ‘Skip the Copay’

Some excerpts …

The Precision Neo is as skinny as a supermodel and looks pretty good for a glucose meter, but that’s about all it has going for it. Once again, as it has done in the past, Abbott has castrated an innovative device for the American market by eliminating the bells and whistles that made it special.
……
When I first heard Neo was coming to our shores, I was looking forward to a new blood ketone testing platform, as I didn’t realize American Neo had been castrated. I still didn’t get it when my review sample arrived without blood ketone strips. I figured they just forgot to send me some for testing, so I emailed Jessica Sachariason, the Public Affairs Manager of Abbott Diabetes to ask for some. Her reply? “The FreeStyle Precision Neo meter is intended to be used with FreeStyle Precision Neo blood glucose test strips only.”

Men and castration. Apparently always a topic which seems to particularly upset my gender. :fearful: :scream: :smiling_imp:

What was I thinking? How could I have left “they all play keytar!” out of my original suggestion for “Al C and the Keytones”?

Touché Tim, touché!

Shelly,

If they had saliva based ketone strips that’d be cool but don’t believe it’s possible. A toilet based one might be cool (#000 flushes style) it could analyze the watered down urine in bowl so you wouldn’t need to aim as accurately or possibly miss the target zone or hit a hand.

When high (from diabetes) I always just assume ketones for safety’s sake.

The A1C is more to be used as a long term 3mo. avg getting it weekly may be a good idea but the easiest way to get an A1C is to divide your BG avg by the ratio of BG to A1C% which many analysis programs or at least labs give in results. This would drop the price of the meter and sample size.

Naming suggestion » The Ket-One

pronounced “keh twun”

A1C Steak sauce rofl …Oh it seems this forum is too good for that but information_desk_person is included. :eyes:
: rofl :  :fail: :rollingonthefloor: :roller_coaster: roller coasters go up and down this one’s a lift hill. BD

I prefer The Key Tones! LOL The first meter I had, an Abbott, had ketone testing I am sure, think you had to buy different strips. Memory fails me after all this time.

I like this idea. I’d take it one step further and have it in tablet form. So you can drop it in the bowel, it dissolves, then you go . Color change. Then flush. Easy.

i like both ideas and the name i was thinking a usb one would be cool to have it hold, dispensed strips and re tack them after use for easy disposal i would if all this would be to much too ask for maybe if these company would listen to us diabetics they would see want we want if only
