New to EVERYTHING... even this site :P

Hi everyone !!! Just wanted to introduce myself and get some pointers from everyone. I am 24 and I was diagnosed with diabetes about 1.5 years ago. Well this past November we ( The hubs and myself ) decided we wanted to have a baby, even though we already have a mastiff baby :) . I recently had an a1c of 6.6 and my triglycerides were 400 ( outrageous I know ). I am looking for foods and snacks that can help me with both of those. I am going to take a class next month but I want to get a head start on everything. Any suggestions are soooo welcome. I feel like I'm going to have to restart everything. I would like to know kinda what time intervals I should eat and things like that. I feel lost right now :-/.

Thanks everyone !!!!

Ashley :)

Just wanted to say "hi" and welcome! I was diagnosed about 1.5 years ago with Type 1 too - I am a little older than you though (32). I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with baby #2 but it took me about a year to get pregnant.

Are you on a pump? As soon as I told my endo we wanted to have another baby, they immediately got me started, I use the Omnipod and LOVE it. It has made a world of difference for me.

Are you in your honeymoon phase still?

I can completely relate to where you're at - you are learning a lot, your body is (probably) still changing and adjusting a ton, it's OVERWHELMING, but you can do it.

The first thing my endo suggested to me was to start living like I was already pregnant - that is, shoot for BG's of less than 150 1 hour after eating, and back to target (95) 2 hours after eating. It took a while to get good at that, but I'm glad I got that figured out before I got pregnant.

You can do it! Don't get discouraged if you don't get pregnant right away - it only took me 1 try for my daughter (before I had diabetes) and took over a year for my current pregnancy (with diabetes). I was frustrated, but looking back, I think it was a blessing - I still had a lot to figure out and learn and my body just wasn't ready to handle a pregnancy right away. Now that I am pregnant, I have had a GREAT pregnancy so far. I won't say it isn't a lot of hard work (and what I wouldn't give for a milkshake and a slice of pizza, ha!) but both baby and I are healthy and things are going well.

You can do it! Good luck and keep us posted.

I've had diabetes for 6 years. When I found out I was pregnant, my A1C was 6.8 and it dropped to 6.3 within a month. I found that eating something with a ton of protein in the morning has helped with my mornings, which tend to be the hardest for most diabetics. I eat bacon, egg, and cheese on a biscuit or croissant and it seems to stabilize well through the morning. Night time has been harder for me with lots of lows. If you eat protein with each snack and meal, it will help a lot. For example, cheese, eggs, meat, yogurt, nuts, etc. You'll be totally fine! I felt the same way! I'm almost 12 weeks now and my sugars have improved drastically.
