New to Pumping

I’ve been on a pump (AnumusPing)For just a short times & I’m looking for tips & help for running a half marathon.

Pump no pump
Fueling while running

Thanks. Www.mtairyfrog.com

I don't have advice for you, but I want to wish you luck with this pursuit. I started on my Animas Ping July 10. I don't exercise much, especially not running! I know that QB Jay Cutler (a Type 1) eats high protein before games. My thought would be high carbs, but I suppose the protein keeps his blood sugars up longer.

You have to experiment and find what works for you. I do know that my racing BG is different from my alone-running BG. The adrenaline rush I get while racing makes me go higher than I would if I was just running alone.

For any long run, I make sure I have some carbs and protein about an hour or two beforehand. When running alone, I set my basal rate at 0.35 u/H, which I've found through trial and error to work for me. If I'm running longer than 5 miles, I will take a meter with me to check my BG about halfway through. I consume some carbs if low, and if I'm high but under 200, I just ride it out. I don't correct unless I'm higher. And when correcting during exercise, I only do half of my normal correction.

This is what works for me. You have to experiment and find what works for YOU.

That has quite a bit of information, mostly in the main thread. I've posted about my two experiences with Chicago, along with several halves along the way. Probably the posts go back two years. I took my pump and CGM along with me both times, although in the first 1/2, it was like a week after I got the CGM and I didn't have the sensor taped down enough (using IV3000 that came with it instead of Opsite Flexfix that works better...).

Re fueling, my two main rules are 1) clear IOB before big runs 2) bring meter and test. I've kind of hit the point where race strength Gatorade works ok and I generally drink theirs. I ran past the last Gatorade stop in Chicago this year and it slowed me a bit at the end. Maybe, maybe I'd have croaked anyway? We'll never know!

Here's my CGM line for the race, I got a bit carried away with the Gatorade as they had a couple of stops close and maybe I didn't let it hit or something. I got through the race w/ maybe 8 Gatorade cups, one gu and toast, eggs and 2x 4G of carb mini Luna bars beforehand. I felt pretty good about it. I'm not fond of 190 but I knocked it down w/ small boluses during the race.

I had one oops when I forgot to cut the bolus for the GU at mile 18 or 19 and did the full bolus so I had to hit the subsequent Gatorade pretty hard, after a lot of water only stops. Which may have contributed to peeing in an alley. Which wasn't my idea, the 50 something mom running her first came up with the scheme when we saw the line @ the portapotty!
