I just needed to vent about myself for a minute. I am now 7 weeks pregnant. It turns out that this morning sickness thing is way more difficult than I could have ever imagined and unfortunately the only thing that sounds good is bad food. I used to eat so well and now I despise vegetables and salad - great huh? Anyways, I am deciding to put yesterday behind me and take it day by day. I just need some reassurance that the three times, okay well four times that I screwed up in the past couple of weeks wont harm my baby too much. I dont think I could ever forgive myself if something happened to the baby because of my last of self control. I swear its almost better for me not to eat than to eat bad! Oh also my a1c when I got pregnant was 6.8(not very happy about that either).
I look forward to any support/guidance/advice anyone can offer as I dont have anyone close to be that really understands this struggle.
Just so you know we are only human, and being diabetic and going through the things we already have to go to, we are allowed to cheat every once in awhile. Also, just so you know, I got the ok to conceive when my A1c was 7.1%. I got pregnant immediately and was only ever able to get it down to 6.8% throughout my whole pregnancy. I now have an extremely healthy 27 month old daughter and am hopping to have our 2nd one as soon as i can get my A1c down again (it's sitting at 8.3% right now!!!!)
So don't punish yourself for eating "bad" food every so often and especially don't punish yourself with your 6.8% A1c.....I would love for mine to be sitting at that point.
Take care of yourself and if you ever wanna chat, I'm here :)
Can I ask what exactly you're eating that's considered bad food? I craved fast food during my pregnancy and I'm normally not too crazy about fast food. I'm vegan and tend to eat somewhat healthy. There was a point in my pregnancy where I was craving taco bell just about everyday lol. Their bean burritos tasted so good. Both of my babies were born healthy. My advice is just give into your cravings but don't over do it and also don't beat yourself up. Cover whatever you're eating with insulin..and maybe take pre-natal vitamins if you're worried about not eating the right things.
I am definitely taking a prenatal. I am in the same boat as you, well not vegan, but I ate extremely healthy prior to baby like mostly salads, high protein, low carb diet. Now some examples of things that I have eaten that are extremely bad in the past couple of weeks include: pizza, chicken wings, mozzerella sticks, and fried chicken sandwich from arbys. Definitely not me, my husband and I really try to limit our eating out for monetary and health reasons, and unfortunately those seem to be the only things that sound good. This is generally how it goes - I see a commercial for something on tv and then thats immediately what I want...
Anyways, after I wrote my post I really had a nice long talk with myself and had a much better day yesterday. Thats just going to be my new thing, taking it day by day.
Oh man. I just remembered during my first pregnancy, I loved pizza and baked potatoes lol. I generally Hate pizza and never eat it. Then with my recent pregnancy I was all about taco bell burritos like I said and blue bubble gum snow cones lol (tasted so amazing in the summer heat!) Now all of these things sound disgusting. I was able to eat everything without going high though because these cravings happened in the middle of my pregnancy and that's when blood sugar numbers started to drop low! (Apparently from crazy hormones).
I think during the first trimester of pregnancy blood sugars tend to run high, then the second trimester you go low, and the third trimester you'll run high again and then post pregnancy you will go low. Atleast that's how it was for me. I had to adjust my insulin accordingly and I'm still dealing with post pregnancy lows right now because my second daughter was just born on september 25...
Don't get too worried about your eating habits or A1C at this point. I was in the same boat as you when I found out I was pregnant. I used to live on vegetables and then during the first trimester I couldn't stand them - the one time I threw up was when I forced myself to eat a salad. Also, I was going through a stressful time so my A1C was 6.6 but 2 months later it was at 6%. It will get better, the best advice I can give you is prebolus whenever possible 20-30 min, if you are higher than you would like do it an hour ahead of time. Also exercising was way too demanding for me during 1st tri but it did help me to get my higher BG down fast if I didn't prebolus. Hope that helps! You will do great.
Hi Kasey, I understand how you feel. I have also been getting highs and feel awful and scared. I have been eating the same way I always have (very healthy), but my BS are still high. I've decided to increase my insulin dosage and test test test, also walk, walk, walk. Take it a day at a time and stay positive. I'm sure everything will be fine.
Oh my gosh, YOU ROCK!!! 5.2? You're my hero. I was punching myself in the first trimester too, and now at 31 weeks I still have food aversions but I'm getting through it. Do you like to cook?
My pre-pregnancy diet sounds a lot like your pre-pregnancy diet, even when I was marathon training. Part of the change was just incorporating more carbs in general as a more efficient way to get energy and satisfy hunger. Talking to a CDE/Nutritionist was really helpful (mostly because she was supportive). Usually I hate how patronizing they are, but she gave me some options and support and told me it didn't really matter at the beginning if I ate white bread, as long as I kept it down ;) I was craving a lot of cereal and fruit, which isn't the worst thing ever. But also chicken fingers from FAST FOOD places which I don't even eat because I usually keep kosher.
If you're like me and want sweets a fried food but can plan ahead, buy some fresh or frozen organic berries for smoothies, frozen greek yogurt for milkshakes, and MorningStar Farms chick'n nuggets. If you plan lots and lots of healthy and somewhat satisfying snacks, you may not be hungry.
