I am looking into getting an insulin pump.
Anyone using an Omnipod? Do you like it?
Anyone using Minimed? Do you like it?
Would you switch pumps if you could?
Positives/Negatives.
Thanks,
Jodi

I am on the MM Revel and I love it. I use the integrated CGM and also love it. It works well for me. if given the choice to switch to Omnipod, I wouldnt. The main reason being if you forget the PDM, and trust me I forget my cell phone walking out of the house, you cant bolus. I do not mind the tubing. I also an not a fan of the pod failures that many experience. I have yet to have a bad infusion site with my MM in a year and a half of pumping.
So far Jodi,
I LOVE this Revel. Mary does too. She was not happy about going on tubing, but it really is NO problem and the sets are nice and small for her. She can even change a whole set by herself. Coming off of Omnipod to a Revel my advice is: Do what is best for your child but I personally would never go back to Omnipod!
Hi Jodil – I actually just ordered my insulin pump and am waiting for it to come in… have you demoed either? You should be able to by talking to your diabetes educator or your endocrinologist. I tried both the Minimed and Omnipod before I decided on which I wanted and did a little research between the two.
Oh, and of course, this is the best site to speak with people about it!!! =)
So good luck and hope you find the right pump for you
I was told that Omnipod would give you a fake pod to try out to see if you like it.
For me, the Omnipod is just not appealing, because it’s bulky, and you have to keep the monitor with you, which in my case would mean wearing it on my belt or in my pocket, since I walk around without my purse a lot. And I absolutely don’t mind the tubing – I just coil it up and stick it into my pants or thread it through a hole in dress pockets, or use a leg-thing. I clip my pump to the front of my pj’s at night, because I’m a side-sleeper, and it never bothers me. I guess I could use a pod on my belly, but a lot of people wear them on their arms and legs, and that would bother me a lot, because of the chance of knocking it off during clothes changes, or going to the restroom.
So, I prefer a tubed pump, but I’m sure there must be Omnipodders around who could talk about their prefences, and then you can decide for yourself!
Oh… and PS – I chose the Omnipod – just because it fits my lifestyle the best… plus I like the idea of not having to worry about the tubes and there are more site you can attach the pod to… I tested it out and I like attaching mine to my lower back side =)
Natalie you reasons are the same as mine. I am fortunate that I get to basically try everything out there for an extended period as any Endo’s office usually offers “Demo’s” which are often sitting around. Although I really do like the Omnipod I too thought the bulkiness would get in the way. The only place I really feel comfortable wearing it is on the back of my arm. The tubing does not really bother me as I will coil it also and tuck it in to my jeans/shorts. I wrote this earlier on another thread but will put it here too: I do not like the way Omnipod tracks the insulin on board for carbs (as in it simply does not!). This is one of the things I like most about the pump is the tracking of IOB and it is a poor assumption Omnipod made that we can count carbs accurately 100% of the time.
All that being said I really enjoy when I am able to wear it and not be “attached” for a few days but am usually happy to be going back to my tubed pump.
Yes, your correct.
i think this is why her correction doses seemed to be too strong. I never took into account nor did I know to, her bolus on board.
What a great piece of the puzzle I was missing.
You should be an instructor on something.
Guess what? He is!
AHA!!!
I wear a pod and (usually) love it. However, the IOB feature is agreeably incorrect. I met with a trainer who indicated that it will be fixed on the next gen pdm that comes out with the smaller pods once approval is granted by the FDA…so who knows when that will be
Ahhhh, that’s the problem with a LOT of these devices. There are upgrades coming, but no one knows when, and when you are faced with needing to get the equipment NOW, what are you to do, when once you get it, you are stuck with it for 4 and maybe soon to be 5 years?
That is exactly my problem. I really need to go on the pump ASAP to help alleviate some complications (or hope to) and while the idea of the Omnipod with no tubing and self insertion seem very appealling, the lack of support, the issues with reliability and overcorrecting concern me NOW.
I wish I could combine the Omnipod with the support and reliability of Minimed/Medtronics. I am afraid to start on the pump with a company that (at this time being new in Canada-only a month) has not yet established a very good support system.
So who to chose and who to lose?
Thanks for everyones input!!!
I’ll pray for you,
I do know one thing, my daughter’s nurse practitioner told me there are about 20 companies right now (could be a slight exaggeration) that are working on a patch pump. I mentioned it to the minimed lady that was working with me and I told her, “I know you guys are working on a patch pump, but your not allowed to say -aren’t you”. And she just laughed and agreed with me.
I think in the next 2-3 years we are going to see more of these. So hand in there - AND the tubing is not so bad! Believe me!
Our dtr has been on the omnipod since Dec 2010. If I could go back in time we would have gone with the Animas Ping. We love the tubeless aspect but that’s about the only pro I can see at this point. I have never had trouble with Insulets customer service but the product needs real improvement. I won’t go into all the deets because it seems to get people upset but if you want to know, msg me.
It was Animas, but lately they have been on my s**t list… LOL
When I first started researching pumps, my first pick was the omnipod. I think it’s a cool unit. However, I finally settled with the Animas Ping. It is chuck-full of features, and fairly easy to use, and the design itself is very attractive. Not like Medtronic, which makes you look like you have a medical device on.
There were two main reasons I chose Animas. For the type of insurance I have, it was cheaper in the long run (appose to Omni). Next was because I like the fact that, if my infusion set accidentally pops out, I don’t loose insulin, I can just put on another infusion set, instead of changing an entire cartridge. Lastly, I was too concerned about having an omnipod on, and having to go for x-rays, or any other special procedure. At least with my Animas, I can disconnect, and reconnect when I want to.
Oh yah… And it’s water proof (up to 12 feet). I don’t have to worry about anything when it’s raining cats and dogs…

I have been a pump user for over 30 years and have used just about everything out there. The Minimed Revel is the best product out there (although I wish it had a colored screen like the Animas). I tried the Omnipod twice and was not smitten with it. The only plus is there is no tubing but I have been dealing with tubing for years and so it is no big deal. I used the Animas for several months (my wife is a diabetes educator so I get to try out most products) and found it worked fine but had many extra steps in doing basal, boluses, etc. so I stayed with the Minimed. It is logical and it works.
Good to hear, my Revel is on order!!!
I switched from medtronic to omnipod after my four years were up and I’m so glad I did. I had the biggest problem with getting my cord caught on doors or fall out of my pockets and that hurts, which was my major issue. On omnipod I am more limited to where I can put my pump, but at least I’m not getting caught on doors.
Try them all and this may give you a sense which one will work for YOU …the most important person in this scenario !!
I am wearing a MM since 2001 ; trialed the Omnipod this summer …a picture on my Tu page . …bottom line I stay with the Veo MM …their CareLink program is outstanding , so is the small delivery of basals /bolus
