Operation Blood Sugar fail

Hi everyone. For those of you who caught my last post yesterday about my blood sugar/insulin pump dramas and Animas recommendation, I’ve updated my blog with the continued dramas at http://princessofpavement.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/operation-blood-sugar-fail/

Thanks for any suggestions/tips you might be able to provide.

Operation Blood Sugar fail

I think I would have switched the site around to see if it might’ve worked better somewhere else I think? I haven’t really done that but if it were not working, either basal or the correction boluses, that’s what I would try. I’ve read about scar tissue but to me, I don’t think that’s an issue b/c it’s always been extremely painful if I stick it in somewhere I’ve stuck it in recently? I also do manual insertions that I think are with an angled needle so I just pinch and stick and the pinch will always tell me if there’s something there. One other thing that I’ve noticed over a few years of working out more regularly is that as I feel like I’m getting in shape more, I will notice that I don’t get as much bang for my buck out of insulin and, in turn, need to turn up my pump a notch or two. I don’t run my numbers up quite as high as the ones you are reporting though.

WOT but I’ve signed up for my first marathon too, Chicago in October. Winter won’t quite quite but I have a 1/2 coming up at the end of April.

Have you changed your insulin or tried bolusing by injection?

There are a bunch of possibilities – not just you or your pump! Some women see their basal needs go up by 20-30% at certain points in their cycle (but it would be strange if you just started having this now). When I have an infection, my basal needs can increase by 50%. You should call your endo!

I insert mine manually too … the gadgets freaked the crud out of me  I’m hoping the 5 per cent increase that I inputted into the pump last night helps.

Good luck on your marathon … the one I’m doing in May is my second and I’m really hoping for a much better experience than my first

Thanks Kristin.

What happened in the first? I keep waiting to get hit by a car or something and bring me to a screeching halt but so far so good?

Oh man, everything that could go wrong, went wrong. I fell down the stairs 2 weeks prior and jammed my hip up but was determined not to quit. And then on the morning of the race, I went and used the port-a-potty for the second time and as I was sorting everything out with my shorts afterwards, I heard this loud thump followed by a splash and I was like oh crud, I really hope that wasn’t my pump (keep in mind it was really dark still) but upon reaching around to see if it was still there, it was. Phew. What wasn’t, however, was my bottle of electrolytes. Oh joy. If you go to my blog, and search “A bib too far” (it was in October … I think I wrote it on Oct. 13?) you can read all about the debacle. I look back on it now and laugh though … and I’m far too competitive to let that be my only experience  Good luck with yours.
