I tend to have a problem with overeating when I have a low BG. Does anyone have any ideas on ways to help "wait it out" instead of eating everything I can find?
Yes, use glucose tablets for lows, not food. They are the most rapid acting treatment, you can figure an exact dose, and you are highly unlikely to overdo them as they don't taste that good.
I agree with Zoe about glucose tabs. Unless I'm falling very fast or am below 50, I don't use more than 2 tabs and then wait 30 minutes (not 15) to see if I'm back in decent range.
I agree. Tabs work very well and one or two will usually do the trick. I used to do as you are saying and go overboard with food. Now I see a low as an opportunity to stay below 100. I typically follow up my tabs with a small protein / fat snack like peanut butter or cheese. Most of the time I am low because I waited too long to eat.
Have treatments of 15 g carbs available to eat just for lows. I have keep lifesavers in my pocket (6 = 15g carbs) and a 6 oz cup near my fridge ( 6 oz OJ = 15 g carbs). Eat and try to distract yourself or set an alarm to test in 15 minutes.
I've gotten to where, particularly if there's not a lot of IOB, I will treat with less than 15G of carbs as that seems to make things run higher afterwards. These days I'm using mostly Smarties and try to have 5-7 of them, more if I'm working out. I like to set the kitchen timer for 20 minutes and see how things are then
I use Rockets as well. One pack has 7 grams of carbs, so I tend to take 2 full packs. They go down fast. The toughest thing is getting into the plastic packaging when you're low :)
I also take Skittles at times. They are high-sugar, no fat. Since they are chewy, it takes awhile longer to actually consume them.
