Pains due to insulin allergy?

Hi everyone. I’m new to this forum. First of all, I would like to thank all of you for your wonderful input. I’ve learnt so much about diabetes from this forum. I was on oral med for 12 years until my A1c shot up from 6+ to 8+ for no apparent reason. My endo put me on Mixtard and Lantus in addition to the oral med. I dieted and exercised. My endo worked with me to adjust my insulin level, but no matter what I did, my A1c came down to 7.2 at the lowest. A few months after starting insulin jabs, I experienced tingling pain in my fingers. That got progressively worse. I had trigger finger in my left middle finger and the finger joint aches were getting unbearable. My endo tried different types of anti-inflammatory drugs but that didn’t help. The pains started creeping up my elbows and shoulders. When the last A1c was 7.5, my endo gave up. He stopped the Mixtard and put me on Januvia in addition to Minidiab and Metformin and Lantus. After 3 days, all the pains suddenly disappeared. The constant hungry pangs and shakes were gone. I felt so wonderful. What was not so wonderful was my sugar level. The post-meal readings are all above180. My endo thinks that I might be allergic to the Mixtard but he said he had never come across such a case before. I’m on a new plan now. Lantus in the morning and night with Glucophage and Minidiab. I hope this works. I don’t want to go back to Mixtard.

Hi Varena,

Welcome!

Sorry to hear of your problems. Why didn’t your endo simply suggest another brand of insulin if he suspected an allergic reaction to Mixtard? There are options to Mixtard. Am also curious about him prescribing Mixtard & Lantus. Did you have many lows on this combo? Your mention of shakes & hunger sounds like lows.

You’d probably have better control taking Lantus & a rapid acting insulin instead of the oral meds.

I’d discuss other rapid insulin options with him. Lows make my hands shake & very hungry. How high are the highs when this happens?

You’re most welcome:)

Hoping this won’t upset you, but you’re going to have to lower BG slowly to get used to more normal BG so you won’t feel ill & shaky. You’re right. You are not missing the lows as your doctor suggests. You’ve gotten so used to high BG that you feel awful when it’s lower. I felt dreadful also when I went through this phase, but it passed. I just toughed it out. Drinking lots of water is good & testing often is great.
