Patience and determination pay off

well hi everbody, it's been a long time!
things are going well with me.
i have some good news to share and thought "who better to share it with?"

so after almost 10 months i finally received my Disability Tax Credit. i applied for this last november.

i got approval way back in February but only for the years 2011 until 2017.

after many phone calls and letters, including a second one from my Endo, it was determined that i was, indeed, entitled to this credit dating back to 2004. they can only go back so far, and i am fine with that.

what bothers me is the hoops they make us jump through.

i had to detail my every waking (and sleeping) moments for them. i had to have my endo fill in a very detailed form (many pages) and still that was not enough. although he clearly stated that i have been an insulin dependant diabetic since 1974, they decided that i would only be eligible for the years 2011 until 2017, at which time i will have to go through this process again. i guess that's in case, by some miracle cure, i no longer have diabetes?

in the end, after patience and my own stubborness and determination, it was decided that i truly am diabetic and will be for the forseeable future!

i did receive a nice cheque which was for the reassessment of my taxes from 2004 to 2010.

i'm glad i kept at it. it took me a few years to actually apply for this credit. the reason was because of the word "disability". i realize that this credit is for many different types of disabilities, but it just struck a chord with me. i had never really considered myself "disabled" and i still don't.

i am appreciative of the rebate though, and will put it to good use!

I am very happy to read this kim !!!Are you willing to ad a short note in the discussion Jan 2009 and above all share your success with other MDI and insulin pumpers in Canada ?? I still hear often ,that many are not aware . I like to mention too about the savings account , but it's supper time first :)

thanks nel, and i added a "short" note to the discussion and hopefully, if anyone has questions, they feel they can email me and i will help if i can.

What did you need to prove to qualify for disability? Inability to work? Thanks!

Lumberjack : Disability Tax Credit is for Canadian Tax payers with diabetes and either use MDI or are insulin pumpers , as in Kim's case and mine as well :) ..one has to prove with papers signed by GP, Endo or Diabetes Specialist , that it takes one a minimum of 14 hours weekly to manage one's diabetes .One has to have an income , hence the wording " credit " .People living with other medical issues may also apply http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t2201/t2201-12e.pdf
