I am not an Omnipod user this question is actually for my friend at work who wears an Omnipod. This morning her PDM gave out, omnipod is sending her a new one but in the mean time can she leave her pod on even though her PDM is broken? Because the pod will continue to give her her basal correct? Has this ever happened to anyone before
Pod will continue to give her basal until it expires. Unfortunately she will not be able to bolus and will need to give herself injections at meal times. Batteries should still be good in the pod.
I had this happen, sort of. My PDM locked up and wouldn't turn on any more. I ran with the basal just fine for almost 3 days, bolusing with insulin pens during that time. I had to do it this way because I was on a business trip at the time and couldn't slow down to even call Insulet until the end of the trip. Insulet quickly helped me get the PDM working again, so all's well now. The worst part of the whole thing to me was that when the pod ended it's 3 day run it started to beep. And since the PDM was no longer paired to it, we couldn't shut it off. My daughter finally got it to quit by brute force method (hammer...)
Called insulet customer service (in India) and was told that my pod would only work for 8 hours without a pdm. And they won’t get me a new one for at least 36 hours. They suggested that I take the pod off. I was reluctant since I have no long acting insulin in the house.
This has reassured me that I can go to sleep without worrying about it.
