Per the New York Times, Diabetes Drug Maker Hid Test Data on Risks, Files Indicate

I personally am not on this drug (I am a Type 1) but the story is quite shocking. Hopefully it's not something a lot of Type 2s take (?). Thought I'd post this link just in case someone could use the info. See link below.

I saw a news article about this earlier. One thing I will never understand is when a drug company creates a drug to treat a certain disease, in this case diabetes, and that drug has a side effect that is high risk in the patients disease (heart disease). i mean shouldn’t any diabetes medication avoid risks that include heart, stroke or or other vascular diseases?

The thing that also gets me when the discussion of this type of issue comes up (drugs and side effects or risks) is that focus is only on the impact to the patient. I’m not trying to undermine the importance or impact there, but in this day any age we also have to factor in the impact to the overall health care system. For every patient that develops heart disease due to a non-disclosed risk factor in the medication, that is a patient now that requires two costly treatment plans on top of the diminished quality and life expectancy of the patient.

And yet, you never see these guys going to prison to ruining the lives of patents and adding to the increased cost of our health care system(s).

I read this last night and was disgusted. I hate that I have such a love/hate relationship with Big Pharma. While I am totally dependent on the drugs they make, and they keep me alive (Type 1 here, also) and I’m grateful that they exist, I am also so cynical of their sketchy business practices that often hurt people either physically or financially. This most recent episode with GSK and Avandia is NOT helping my cynicism.

I think a healthy dose of cynicism is healthy when considering big business, government or anything in the health industry (Pharma and Insurance companies in particular).
