I very recently found out that I'm pregnant with my third child. My first two were at least more planned and my A1C before hand a bit better, Aug 1st I was 8.2 I'll be rechecked this Thursday. I didn't face any real complications with my first two but like I said I was more prepared. I'm so nervous at this point that I'm not even excited yet. The only other type 1 with a child that I know of had a horrible experience and her daughter, age 8, is still facing serious health problems because of it. I need reassurance but I also need the truth so regardless of how things went for you please share.
Also! I attempted breastfeeding my second but just couldn't get my bs to stay up! I actually disconnected my pump before going to bed one night and still woke up low in the morning. I started having seizures every morning so I stopped at only 2 weeks. I REALLY want to be successful this time so any tips, other than eating high carb (that's pretty obvious), please share that as well.
I don't have personal experience, but I read a fabulously reassuring blip on "my diabetes secret" (hosted through Tublr) a few months ago where a lady confessed to having an A1C in the 7s and 8s throughout her ENTIRE pregnancy, and her kid was 100% normal and perfect.
Guidelines are there to guide us, but there's no guarantee that either staying in them, or straying outside of them, will have a pre-defined outcome.
I am glad to read that you have two children and expecting third. That is reassuring thing for me. As for the A1C, my endocrinologist always says that it is not as important as daily blood glucose monitoring results. I am not saying it is good to keep it in 8s, and I am sure you know all of that. But just if your bg is at certain points high and remains normal during the entire day that period of 1 hour is not going to affect a lot your pregnancy or health while it might affect A1C reading. Also worrying and stressing yourself over A1C is not going to help neither your diabetes nor your baby, so even if it is not perfect right now, you will be able to bring it down, starting from now. Also, I know one friend of mine who had her baby while her A1C readings were between 7 and 8 entire time and she had beautiful and healthy girl who is 3 right now.
I am a type I who has had 2 children 13 months apart. My kids basically came naturally and the A1cs were not great to start.
The important thing is that you really watch your control now. Go to a specialist diabetic pregnancy clinic if you live near one.
Both my kids are healthy. I am healthy. My first baby I had severe toxemia... and a C. section. The second baby I was able to deliver with a midwife, and no complications.. Take care of yourself.
I could not breastfeed, as I was exhausted. If breastfeeding is a goal, maybe you could contact your local Laleche league and find out if anyone there has experience with breastfeeding type I's.
Start planning the breastfeeding now. And also realize that if it is just too much, it's too much. So let it go if you have to.
I was just about to say I saw that on that tumblr. :)
Similarly, some women have one drink and have a baby with FAS. Others are raging alcoholics and their babies are fine (except for having alcoholic mothers). There's a lot of stuff with babies like that. Just focus more on what you can do today to be healthier for the baby, and don't worry about what happened in the past and what could or couldn't happen because of it. :)
