Hi Katsz,
I’m not saying that is the case. I’m only saying that’s a POSSIBLE reason. I was just brainstorming and trying to think of possible reasons for the problem.

I am really beginning to believe it is that some pods prime fully and others have air in the canula. This is scary to me… how much do we give him to fix this?? One time it could be too much and the next not enough! Yesterday he put a new pod on in the AM…was high all day and at around 5pm he accidentally ripped it clean off w/ a shirt removal and and had to change it…he was high all threw the night… we even did a 30%increase for a 1/2 hr! and corrected twice in the night. Well…just checked him this morning and he is back to 110. After a high as big as 366… checked for ketones…none. Some pods start out good and others horrible… site location seems to make no difference. I sure hope Omnipod is working on this issue. Do you have any idea if they are at least aware it could be one?
Wow… I must have missed yours… yes… I am convinced now that the thing doesn’t always fully prime. How can you know what to do if sometimes it does and others it doesn’t… My son went from 366 last night and I had to correct several times before he went to 110. This bothers me… He doesn’t want a tubed pump but w/ those you see you have it primed! Every three days he has a few hrs of chaos…not good! That will add up in the years to come as damage to his body. Omnipod needs to fix this problem. This explains why my niece who is on the Animas Ping does not have this problem…and we do.
We were having that problem but it seems to be a site issue for us - when we use the top of the butt area - we need an extra .5 bolus on the new pod - when we use the back of the arms - no extra bolus needed. Also, if we are changing the pod more than every 3 days we have to let the arms rest or we get the same problem.
Now… he has had his PDM fail… he had to Rest it once on vacation and again today and it wouldn’t rest… so I tried again later and it finally rest… now bolus calcs for 3 hrs though…again. He had to change pod…again… Three pod changes in three days!!! One…ripped off one pdm fail and 3rd seems ok for now. New Pdm comes tomorrow… couldn’t dose w/ the old one since the pdm lost communication w/that pod. He was in the 200s before the change…will check him again soon and do a extra bolus if needed…we changed it right before dosing dinner… so maybe it won’t be too bad.
Talked a lot to OMNIPOD…they swear that the pod would “alarm” and “shut down” if it didn’t fully prime… (Yeah…right!)
Wow, Katsz mom…you guys are just having an off week! I have about 15 or 16 bad weeks with the pod each year. Just smile and move on! I do believe the pod alarms when it “shuts down” due to an empty reservoir, or an occlusion, but not if it comes loose for any reason. Turn your luck around! PEACE! (YOure a great mom…i wish my mom was so good with me when i was a young T1!)
My mom actually used to “punish” me for becoming diabetic! (bad joke)
I told them today… some pods don’t fully prime and others do and that “someone” even tested it off of the body and saw that it didn’t push any insulin at first w/ one. They said “If a pod isn’t fully primed and alarm will go off and that one will fail”…hmmmmmm I told them that this doesn’t seem to be the case w/ some pods and that many of the people on Omipod are seeing this as a possible problem and could they please report it as a possible problem. I told them love the Pods and that my son won’t go on a tubed pump…in fact he said he’d go MDI before a tubed pump! But this is an issue that needs to be addressed by them.
My poor son… 3 pods in 3 days. School starts day after tomorrow…new PDM comes tomorrow afternoon. If the old pdm doesn’t fail…yet again…before the next pod change we can keep using it before sending it back. They have been nice on the phone but they won’t let me know what the code means…they say they don’t know. Yeah…right. They also say that a pod would alarm if not fully primed before putting it on… Yeah…right. This is an issue… guess it is up to us to find what works best for each of us… I am nervous to dose extra…what if that pod primed and he goes too low… but… I will do a small temp basal if I see the high coming… which… that reminds me… about that time now.
Katsz - I need to know…I was having a mean string of pod failures and the error code (which they said they could not identify) was 19…bunch of 0s…69. Is that your errror code?
No… I didn’t write it down but mine ended in 23 I think. Let me check if I can find the code on the records of the pdm…I will wait until later… trying not to do too much extra stuff… we want it to hold out for this pod period.
I understand, good luck! (especially with school starting) and PEACE!
