I’m a little bummed right now, and I’ll tell you why. I feel like all the press these days, and all the blogs, and all the Twitter-ati, all they talk about is pumps. OK, disclosure, I’m gonna whine a little here. Pump this, pump that, grrr! I’m not on a pump. I’m trying to get a free one, but I guess I’m not a good enough role model. Now I’m making myself laugh, this is too much Dan, you’re a perfectly good role model, you cheap bastard. (I hope everyone can stand me talking to myself) But yeah, everything is about pumps and I don’t use a pump. And I’m actually OK with that. I actually feel blessed that I really don’t use a lot of insulin. I average about 15-20 units of two different insulins daily. Total. That’s it. Sometimes less, depending on my workout schedule. I probably throw away more of my monthly allowance than I use, it kinda sucks, cause it goes bad, they don’t make small enough vails for me. But I’m diabetic, oh yeah, I am definitely T1 diabetic.
What really sucks about this whole thing, is recently I got asked to do this really super cool thing, a study on T1’s who specifically are long-distance cyclists, mt. bike specific, and endurance specific on top of that. Honestly, are there more than a couple of us out there.
Tony Cervati, Type 1 Rider, is my freaking hero, and he was recruiting people to do an 18 hour race. That’s ME!!! I shouted. But bad news, for me anyway, ensued. You have to be on a pump. And I’m not. Bummer.
This is exactly the kind of thing I want to do, so that I can then be a better role model, and get press for diabetes, and look cool to kids, and their parents, as someone who can do anything, even with diabetes. I challenge anyone out there to do the 24 hr. mt. bike races I’ve done, we’ll see who can do what and who can’t.
But anyway, I’m still training, and trying to get the word out there that diabetes will never stop me or slow me down, and I am going to do a big race at the end of the summer. Mt. biking is in my blood, and especially the longer, the better. Hopefully I can inspire some kids to do the same, using diabetes as fuel for their passions.

We come in different options. I’ve been more interested in an accurate and less problematic CGMS. Some Diabetics have been dissatisfied(sp) with those also for different reasons. I like to know where my sugars are often.
