I was at Olive Garden today in Bolingbrook, IL and my husband saw one of the waiter’s with a pump attached to his belt at his lower back. I never see fellow pumper’s but my husband can find them. I said are you sure it is not a pager, he said nope it is a pump.
I saw him later running around, happy as could be, with his medtronic pump on his lower back.
He was so thin, but very healthy looking and ran around like he did not worry about lows (I struggle big time with any movement.) I of course wondered what his basal setting was at, and was very jealous of his happiness and how thin he was.
Who thought I could ever be jealous of a fellow pumper, ha!!
I bet he does not eat the food he is serving. Ooooo and men have such options with where they can put their pumps. Women don’t tuck in their shirts much.
Isn’t it funny how we are able to do a “dia-check” and pretty much tell if a fellow d is feeling good and doing well? True story…I had a d friend who could tell if I was high when she talked to me on the phone. She lived in another state for cryin’ out loud!!! She said when I was high my lips made a smacking sound. Go figure.
“Ooooo and men have such options with where they can put their pumps. Women don’t tuck in their shirts much.”
Lol, well I guess that is compenstated for men not having the option of a bra to keep their pump in.
I ran around Bolingbrook, IL this afternoon too! Sports Authority, Borders & Jewel. I had two black bean and garlic chips they were giving away at Jewel. They had the chipotle flavored too but I didn’t want to get carried away?
Yes, pumpers are everywhere! About a year ago I was in a Trader Joes supermarket here in Oregon & the girl checking me out had a pump clipped to her belt, so I said “Snap, I’ve got one of those too”. & showed her mine, tucked into my Waist-It.
Bragger, but after my megacarb lunch #bgnow 119, but still not thin :-P.
One day I will run into you fellow pumper
LOL, I was holding off for the booze aisle but they weren’t there today! A couple of weeks ago I had 5 different samples there. Running errands is about as much as I get out these days though!
I’ve never run into a pumper in public before. One time I was in Barnes and Nobel and a man was at the desk asking for a book regarding teens and Type 1 as his daughter had just been diagnosed. I said hi, gave him a TuD card and told him to hang in there and he seemed to appreciate it. Last week my Type 1 Women’s Group had a potluck and it was so fun to see everyone pushing buttons or else giving a shot. Our hostess asked when people would like to eat and one woman said, “I need a 20 minute advance to bolus”. Thanksgiving I was at my friend’s and asked for a 15-minute heads up for my shot. She told me and then it ended up being a 1/2 hour. I don’t think non-D’s understand the significance of the request! Damn it felt good to have dinner with a dozen other type 1’s! We each brought a recipe including carb count for the dishes we made.
Now that I have my pump it will be funny if I bump into an acquaintance who I haven’t told about my new toy. You don’t have to know me very well to know how much I hate cell phones. So anyone glancing at the pump and thinking it is a cell phone will be really surprised.
I’m still working on the various ways to wear my pump. So far, bras are out (doesn’t really fit as I finally found a brand of bra that fits me perfectly), pockets seem to pull, clipping is in, and I’m anxiously awaiting my Tallygear belt which I’ll use for sleep and maybe all-purpose.
Love the Zuppa! Did you find recipe at copycat? How close to original does it taste?
I’ve never run into another pumper, other than the people I already know. But they’re becoming more and more common, so it’s gotta happen someday!
BTW, isn’t OG the one that no longer provids nutrition info? I have a copy but I think I located on the “black market” from a fellow d who lives in one of those states where it is mandated.
I’ve seen only a few other pumpers! I was with my ex once at an amateur MMA tournament and a girlfriend of another competitor was wearing her pump proudly clipped to the front pocket of her jeans. Just a few weeks ago I saw an older gentleman walking around a mall in Green Bay, WI wearing a pump.
I was on an airplane about a year ago and a fellow passenger one row up had a pump. I got here attention and showed her mine at which case she came back sat down and started telling me about her pump (Charlie) and how much she loved it. I showed her my blue one wand she about flipped. She wanted to know how i had gotten such a pretty color. I told her i ordered it, and she was so upset because she got hers at the hospital (with no choice of color). I am glad I was not on the receiving end of the telephone at the hospital the next day.

The only time I see other pumpers is at conventions (e.g.JDRF, IDF). I’m hoping to meet up with Aaron Nolan, who has been here in Montreal since last summer. We talked last week, and he was feeling down that he’s not met any other diabetics, let alone pumpers. I’m trying to source out groups for him (20-30 age range) so maybe we can all meet up for a drink. Pumping here in this province (Quebec) of Canada is still very rare. My god daughter’s son Aaron just went onto a pump but they live a few hours away. It’s sorta neat to get together with him (he’s 11 - and he gets it about basal rates/I:C ratio - it’s amazing to know all of that at his age - am very impressed with him). I saw him over Christmas.
LOL on where we woman can keep our pumps Karen. I’ve been trying out some different products for keeping the pump on various places on our body - so will be writing about those shortly - I’m so behind in writing lately - got too lazy of the holidays! Anyway, I tend to wear my pump on my waistband at the back, except when I’m driving where I keep it up front for when I have to press the alarm buttons to silence it from beeping then vibrating (annoying as all heck against the hip bone!).
Most people who see my pump tho’ think it’s a pager or a camera - they don’t realise the long tubing makes it a pump. That’s one thing I like about Salvador Dali (the name of my pump) even despite his swirly tickly moustach
And DUH, I’m forgetting to mention that I have a friend who is also a pumper, and I work with a T2 who uses a pump.
Anna, re Aaron , he posted on the Canadian site , I responded to his discussion May 2010 …lost him …glad to read he did come to C.!!..maybe he should re-connect , what do you think ?
I had lunch today with 2 other pumpers plus our Accredited Supporters : 1) my hubby 2 ) our Insulin Pump Nurse !!
Two of my clients are also pumpers and I saw a woman at a show at the Museum of Fine Arts wearing a pump. It’s not so easy to tell with podders unless they wear the pod on their arm.

Hey, you guys aren’t far from me. I am on the edge of SW side of Chicago!
(we should get a little chicago land group together on here or something.)
Boy, I haven’t gone to Olive Garden in so long - I can’t have pasta anymore.
I agree! I’m just outside of the suburbs southwest of chicago.
If you ask for the gluten free menu there is a better chance of finding something. Yes they still show stuff with potatoes and rice and such but one doesn’t get quite the variety of pasta selections and they are very good at changing extra veggies for the starchy stuff. I was mightily impressed! Sorry tis belonged with the olive garden menu discussion on page 1
