Am i the only one who bolus’s RIGHT before i eat?? Seems to work fine for me…
thats what I do too, and I don’t seem to have any problems either.
I bolus right before I take a bite
Nice! Lol, im glad im not the only one
i blous right before i eat unless im over 130
90% of the time I do it just as I am sitting down to eat. If I am over 140, I do it about 10 minutes before, if I remember to. I never bolus early if I am eating out. I need to see the food before I bolus.
Joshua, if your numbers are working for you then keep doing what you are doing.
For Chinese takeout I bolus 30+ minutes before, and wait until I feel it, because of how fast chinese hits me
For Pizza and beer I bolus up to a half hour AFTER the meal, and then I square wave for 3 hours.
whatever works…works.
I was a bit low this morning, so food first , then insulin …it proves to me again …we are all different …indeed if it works for you , keep on doing it … our Health Team Members are our Consultants .
I bolus about 10 minutes before if I think about it. Otherwise I do it right before I start eating. But if I’m below 70 then I eat first and bolus after I’m sure I’m going up.
Bolus before sitting down? If I remember . . . maybe. Usually it’s a case of “Oh, ■■■■, I almost forgot to bolus. Let’s see, 15, 30, 45 . . .”
What? You don’t count by 15’s?
Me too!
First of all…Terry…“you know you are a diabetic when”… you count by 15s…right? If it works…don’t fix it. For me it means a bolus just prior to taking my first bite. Before pumping, I used to wait 20 min after eating a slice of pizza or anything that was cheesy…is that a word??? Now, I use the extended bolus feature and that works great! I had an unpleasant experience of taking that shot and not getting to eat…YIKES!!! I also got that sinking feeling when I expected prompt service at a restaurant and that didn’t happen…so now I wait until the food is delivered.
Since I know of no other way, I, too, bolus right before I eat. The problem is, my insulin takes about 3 hours before it starts working in the blood. It was suggested that I bolus about 45 minutes before I eat, but I am such a poor planner that I often don’t know what I’m going to eat 45 minutes before I eat. I just throw things together. Solution???

I do this because I am super sensitive to Humalog and if I did it 10-15 minutes before I ate, I would go super low. If I am over 150 I will dose and wait 10 minutes.
cheesy is a word =)
I bolus 30 min before I eat. Works great for me that way.
I bolus as soon as I sit down unless I’m high.I wait to bolus if I am low.
I used to bolus right when (or just after) until I understood insulin better. Not to pick on everybody, but A1c’s are elevated by your 1-hour post-prandial (post-meal) spikes. Bolusing even 15 minutes before you eat matches the curve of fast-acting insulin to carbohydrate conversion to glucose.
I guarantee you that if you bolus earlier, your 1 hour spike will be less severe. I have been amazed at the results since I started trying it in June of last year. I learned that here from others on TuDiabetes and reduced my A1c from 7% to 6% in under 6 months of trying it. If you don’t believe it, try doing a 1-hour test post-dinner doing it each way with the same or similar meals and tell me it doesn’t help.
After I asked my CDE about her opinion of it, she said that it was absolutely what we needed to do. She said that CGM technology, if it’s done nothing else, has rewritten our understanding of insulin’s curve. She says that the fast-acting insulins (Apidra, Humalog, etc) need to be taken 20 minutes or more before the meal and that the slower fast-acting ones of yesteryear (Regular - which I was always told to take 20-30min prior) ought to be taken as much as an hour beforehand. For me with Apidra, if I’m in my target range, I can’t push it much past 20min or I WILL dip too low, but it keeps me from spiking over that 140 mark post-meal most days.
I hate to suggest it, but if you can stack your boluses - put some on board for at least the minimum amount you think you will eat - and then a second bolus for the rest when you’re sure, that at least puts some insulin on board beforehand.
I’m doing good to remember after I eat! After several times of bolusing 15 minutes before and having the meal delayed, I usually wait until the food is in front of me. If it’s working, keep on.
