Ranting

Hey everyone!
First off ive been tryimg to get on here when ever i get the chance however i am at band camp right now… Anywho i just need to rant. I really wish people would be more informed about diabetes. What bugs me the most is when i really need to use the restroom and nobody lets me. I rant about this because i was in sectionals with my section and i was 304 and had to use the restroom but the teacher wouldnt let me. This also happens alot at school.

This kind of situation has happened to me before too. Usually when I say I have diabetes they let me go. At school I have a 504 plan, which basically says things like: I can test my BG in class, I can go to the bathroom whenever I want, I can always go get water, I can eat in class... etc. You might ask your parents about a 504 plan, or class accommodations. At the beginning of camps I always explain to leader/coach/instructor brief diabetes knowledge. Hope this helps!

You need to get your parents working on a 504 plan for school NOW. And you need your parents to advise camp counselors and teachers BEFORE you go about your diabetes needs. No one should have to suffer like that! :-(

I actually do have a 504 plan and my band teacher is diabetic so she understands but she isnt always around. People in my flute section get mad at me when i get out to go check my blood sugar and they tell me maybe instead of checking so much i should try to only test when i need to but the thing is i only go and check when i feel bad and with marching band that happens alot.

Don't worry about your fellow flute players. I happen to play the trumpet, and even if I'm in a concert, diabetes always comes first!

But did you ever consider just setting down your flute and checking right where you are? it's a lot more convenient and you can still listen to your band teacher.
:)

I hate that about diabetes. Some children rupture their bladder. It would be great to never have to go like most people. I was getting made fun of for going and I told my friend that it hurt me. People don’t know if they aren’t told. We stocked our work truck with blue pee bags that have a chemical inside that turns the pee to a solid gel. If I held it then went I’d have too much for one bag.
