I woke up early the other morning to study for an exam and found myself running to the bathroom to throw up. I would drink a huge glass of water and every time I drank any liquids I threw up. I checked my sugars and my pump said “High >600.” Never have I been above 500 in my life and had no idea what was going on. I did 5 units of insulin just to kick start any insulin in me. I was getting dizzy and unable to stand for long time. I decided to skip out on going to school and went straight to the ER. The doctor was unable to get a reading due to my sugars being so high, after a few hours and insulin kicked in, my sugar was able to be recorded at 739. The doctor informed me my sugars were most likely above 1000 and he has never seen someone this high that has not been in a coma.
I am truly lucky I caught on to what was happening with my sugars and I did not allow myself to lay back down since it was 5am. We still have no idea what caused the rapid dangerous high. My sugars came down and were 300-400 the rest of the day and the following day. I changed my pump site, new insulin, everything and nothing budged my sugars. I kept my basal increased by 50%, and that barely brought me down to low 300s. Randomly my sugars plummeted and went back to normal after 24 hrs of scary highs and I removed the temporary basal. I checked my sugars every hour last night to make sure I didn’t sky rocket or plummet out and was able to keep my sugars between 75-113.
Just venting! Never in my life have I had such a high number and I can truly tell you it was the worst feeling in the world. I was unable to hold any fluids down, I could barely see due to blurry vision, was unable to stand without losing balance. But I am back to normal now with perfect sugars!!! Most random crazy scary high ever. I pray to never ever have that happen again.
Oh for the record did not spill any ketones or DKA throughout all of this! The hospital gave me a shot of 15 units and gave me fluids in an IV, 5 hours later I was finally down to 300. Which to me IS STILL really high, but definitely an improvement from 1000-739.
