Review: Healthwise Zero Net Carb Breads

I posted a discussion in April about Healthwise Bakery's zero net carb breads. I promised to report back when I tested them, so here it is!

Healthwise products had no effect on my BG. None! Zero net carbs really means zero net carbs in this case. I ate a dinner roll with nothing else. BG stayed level. I ate a sandwich & only bolused for the filling. Again, no adverse effect. Tonight I'm going to try their pizza crust & expect the same results.

The hamburger buns & dinner rolls are soft & a good size. Like other low carb breads they're on the dry side, but the best tasting low carb bread I've had. Healthwise also makes low carb & zero net carb pitas, bagels, bagel chips, hotdog buns, sliced breads, bread crumbs & desserts. I haven't tried these yet.

The ingredients are healthy (no soy): flours (organic wheat bran, natural wheat protein isolate, natural oat flour), purified water, sea salt, calcium propionate (a natural baking preservative),chicory roots, yeast (sorbitan monostearate). High fiber.

These products taste best warmed, toasted or grilled. They're supposed to freeze well, not that I'm going to have any leftover to freeze.

Healthwise products are available through www.lindasdietdelites.com. Andrew, the owner of Linda's Diet Delites, is great. Wonderful customer service!

I'm not affiliated with Healthwise Bakery or with Linda's Diet Delites. Just thrilled to be able to eat a sandwich again.

Awesome, Gerri!!! :))) Good to know, and thank you for the experiments… :))

I kept testing & waiting for the bread to hit, but it didn’t.

Wish there was a zero carb dumpling wrapper. Been dying for dumplings.

If anyone wants to send me cheesecake for another experiment, happy to try it out:)

That is great! I wish they would sell it in stores so I could use my FoodStamp card to buy! But bagel chips…I may drool!

Wish they sold in stores near you. I asked my health food store to stock Healthwise, but don’t know if they will.

Wow, made right there hotdogs!

So true! I couldn’t wait to have a BLT & ran to the store for turkey bacon. I haven’t tried the sliced bread, but the burger buns are great for sandwiches. The low carb bread (not the zero net carb) with seeds & nuts looks good. I wanted to order their pitas, but they’re out of stock at the moment. Am excited to cook the pizza crust. I need to buy a pizza stone.

Really is the little things in life, isn’t it?

Gerri, Are these products available through stores or just through the internet? On a google search I see a number of vendors. I assume you order them on line. Just curious.

Dreamfields doesnt work for me. Maybe this is an alternative.

Thanks

Dreamfields didn’t work for me either & I trashed it. Lovely spike 4-5 hours after eating it.

I haven’t seen Healthwise in stores, but I live in the boonies. Guess you could email Healthwise to find out. I wrote them & got a prompt response. No low carb bread is going to be as good as carby bread, but these are the best I’ve tried & I tried a bunch. So far, I’ve only had the buns & will be cooking the pizza crust.

I ordered from www.lindasdietdelites.com. Andrew’s really nice & answered my many questions. I wanted to know more about the bagels because I’m a confessed bagel snob having grown up in NYC, the bagel capital where people have heated arguments over where to get the best bagel:) Andrew said the baker’s working on getting them crustier. I’d just about kill for a zero net carb crusty bagel!

Thanks Gerri,

this is something I will check into and get an order out to try some. Thanks for the post.

It would be nice to have a hot dog buns. Right now i eat my veggie dogs and veggie burgers sans bun with mustard or A1. I haven’t seen any low carb buns in the store. My blood sugar can handle the Healthy Life Low carb bread - this week I have Italian and it is like eating white bread. But I can only have one piece per meal - so I can make my self half a sandwich of whatever sort. Except no jelly or banana (for P and J or P and B).

But bagels - yes I would LOVE a big bagel with that rocky kosher salt even those bagel chips. Einsteins was my favorite. I have never had NY bagel but I hear they are pretty different from most bagels around the country.

Ugh, thinking of the rocky salt makes me want a super pretzel! That will have to be the next big no carb thing they make! If they can make a bagel they should be able to make a super pretzel.

Funny that you mentioned salty pretzels. When I emailed Healthwise, I asked them to consider making pretzels & cinnamon buns (both ends of the spectrum). Big, salty pretzels–love em!

I’ve heard that the reason NY breads & bagels are good is because of the mineral composition of the water.

All I can say is “Really?” for real? Wow, I have to try some of this very soon! I just cant wrap my brain around eating all of this and zero carbs? No BS spike? Amazing!

Knock on wood, I’ve had no spikes. I didn’t go whole hog eating too many because with gastroparesis I have to be careful of too much fiber. Fiber slows down my already slow digestion.

I put the dinner rolls in the freezer thinking it would take me a while to go through twelve (yea, who am I kidding!). Think freezing improved them. Popped two in the toaster oven & they were crusty on the outside & soft inside. Perfect. Don’t think they’d be as good microwaved.

They’re lighter than real bread, not as dense, but that’s ok with me.

Curious to find out what other people experience with these products.

Update on Healthwise pizza crust. Too thick & chewy. Maybe it would be better cooked on a pizza stone to crisp it some, but not sure that would do enough.

I would probably devour that chewy thick pizza crust about now…starving. LOL

I have to try some products soon. Thanks Gerri, you are a excellent guinea pig. xo

The crust was disappointing. Wasn’t just chewy. It was kind of rubbery. I make better pizza with a cheese crust. Oops, don’t want to make you hungrier–sorry.

The dinner rolls, frozen & then heated to get crusty in the toaster oven were really good.

Yea, rubbery dosent sound good  Dinner Rolls…that sounds good with some butter, ahhhhhhh.

Dripping with butter is how I ate them! They’d make cute mini-sandwiches.

If I had another pizza crust, I’d try baking it first & then adding the toppings. It was in two layers, which I didn’t notice until it was cooked. Maybe peeling the layers apart would help. Get double the crust.

LOL, you are hilarious! Mine would be swimming in butter! Goodnight Doll.

Gerri…once again, thanks for all the great info. I will be on the Linda’s Diet Delites site pronto. Pita chips!!! Crusty rolls!!! I am swooning.
