Secondary Insurance to cover CGM?

I just got off the phone with Medtronic and the guy informed me that my insurance company told them they won’t cover the CGM sensors so I will have to pay out of pocket for it. It is interesting, because I’m pretty sure that they have paid for them in the past. I already pay a lot for my diabetic supplies but adding another $500/month on to my medical expenses is a bit depressing, honestly. My insurance already covers test strips at the lowest level so I get to spend about $200 a month on those (plus insulin, etc)…My insurance coverage is stupid - they cover insulin but don’t cover test strips so you can figure out how much insulin to give yourself. They’ll cover the CGM device (somewhat) but then won’t cover the sensors to actually use the CGM.

Anyway, enough venting on the cost and company but the representative at Medtronic suggested a secondary insurance to cover the CGM sensors. Does anyone have any experience with secondary insurance?

Stout,

Call your insurance and speak with them directly. The cgm and the sensors, should come under the DME portion, of your insurance.

Strips, syringes, etc. (for my insurance) used to be covered under DME, but switched them over to pharmacy services, last year. Insulin has been pharmacy services all along for me.

It is possible that your insurance has made some changes, but failed to let you know. So give them a call and see what is going on. If they paid for the sensors previously, remind them of that.
