I've got a cold. This morning I woke up with a horrible stomach ache. What do I do for this.
I'm on insulin & metformin. Insulin at each meal & at bedtime. I have 0 appetite for anything but sipping water. I know I should of planned for this but I didn't. Any help is appreciated.
Check your blood sugars every two to three hours and if you're going low, make sure you sip something sweet, like apple juice, grape juice or sweet gingerale. If you're vomiting, you're better off having fluids in your stomach anyway to throw up, rather than dry heaves. Often, when you're sick, your blood sugars go through the roof with stress, so you may not have to worry about lows for a while, but since everyone's different, you still need to check for them. I don't know anything about metafornin, so I'm not sure how it affects you if you miss a dose, but keep taking small shots of fast-acting insulin to keep your blood sugars in control as much as possible.
We all get sick days and we all get stomach viruses. The trick is to sip sweet stuff, test, inject small doses and get through it. Oh, if you have Gravol suppositories or anything like that on hand, that can help. I tend not to use it myself, since it makes me feel too hazy-headed to deal with the highs and lows very well, but it works fine for lots of people.
I would have thought that if you are sick you are more likely to go high than to go low. Theoretically, if you don’t eat, your basal insulin should keep you on an even keel as long as you stay hydrated, but the process of fighting illness itself tends to make people go high. Keep testing, every 2-3 hours.
Hope you're feeling better soon. Keep well hydrated with water, broth & no caffeine tea. Test frequently because illness can send BG soaring quickly. Correct high BG & don't be surprised if it takes a higher dose to bring you down to normal. If you start vomiting or have diarrhea (hope not!), keep an even closer eye on BG because dehydration causes BG to go even higher. A little freshly grated ginger in hot water helps with nausea. Don't hesitate to go to the ER if you can't bring very high BG down on your own. IV fluids & insulin work quickly.
