Skin Tac Allergy

Has anyone had an allergic reaction to skin tac? My son has been using it for months with no problem. However, tonight his skin immediately became itchy, red and painful after application. I had to clean off the area before the pain and redness subsided. Thoughts on why this might have happened?

i know of many people who developed allergies later on. nasty stuff. i personally have no problems with tape so far (knock on wood) but i know that @Jen and @Stoner are amongst those struggling with it. maybe they can pitch in and give you some advice about alternatives.
Kerri (sixuntilme) also has a lot of experience with tape allergies and maybe you want to search her blog for some cool tricks.

A surgen told me hat roughly 70% of his post surgical emmergancy calls related to tape of some kind. He said he no longer uses it in his surgical patients. Obviously we still have to use it, but I think it is more common then any of us know.

I don’t have as immediate a reaction as your son did, but Skin Tac really doesn’t agree with my skin. I’ve never been able to tolerate it, but allergies to various things can develop at any time, even if they used to be tolerated. I have problems with some other adhesives (like Tegaderm, and the adhesive on the second patch of Contact-Detach sets, but weirdly not the first patch). I often have eczema, so that may be part of my problem. I also have allergies to the actual cannula/needle on infusion sets, which cause more problems than the adhesive allergies. I change sets at least every two days (often daily) and stay away from adhesives that have bothered me in the past. I think that there are products similar to Skin Tac (IV Prep and Skin Prep, I think they’re called), so it might be worth checking them out.
