My daughter is 12 and also honeymooning. Before gymnastics (an intense one hour workout) she has a "treat" like a brownie or a slice of cake from starbucks (packaged items that are labeled with the carb count) - things she normally does not have - and boluses for about 50 - 60% of what she should. If the class is going to go longer, she will also have a saltine/peanut butter sandwich as well to throw some protein in the mix. She is on the Omnipod and will suspend her basal as well during her workout. I know your son is on MDI, but boy oh boy that Omnipod made our lives easier. Good luck!!
Honeymoon. Three units Lantus only. Nothing else at this time. No devices.
I too have been playing the food before exercise game. I was making homemade low glycemic bars-i.e. lara bars, but I couldn't get much of a rise in my blood glucose before they kicked in so I was low at the end of my run and then going high.
I read a running website that suggested pudding, oranges, dates, juice to name a few things. I need 45-60 gm before a run and a snack pudding x 2 + 1 orange 15-20 minutes ahead has been working. In time I'll work on cutting the basal back.
I also have jelly beans like acidrock--maybe for the last 15 mins when I used to drop--but I'll try the smarties because glucose tablets definitely don't chew easy when you're almost wasted.
Makes me glad I never got in the habit of exercising! Way too many variables; not to mention all that extra food would make me gain weight which would defeat the purpose! Or anyway, that's my rationalization and I'm sticking to it..lol
That's cute! I like it. I admire honesty.
isn't he just on basal, you probably need to discuss with his endo and adjust his basal rates, maybe do a split dose. the goal is to get the basal so we don't have these lows, maybe decrease a bit day of exercise...???
whether it's natures sugar, corn syrup or regular sugar, it really doesn't make a difference, it's all sugar and typically effects our blood sugars in the same way. there's no study that says organic anything is better then just regular. there are two stages within type 1, typically, when one is honeymooning. i.e., is he, would he wake up high if not on a basal insulin. some, when newly diagnosed just use a bolus insulin because they too are still producing some, wake up fasting OK, but need a bolus for meals. something to think about too.
also, you do realize (I'm sure you're aware) when we're low, the BEST thing to give us is straight glucose...sugar, sugar, sugar..glucose tabs.
Thanks, Howie..lol
I am intriqued with Acidrock23's comments. For me complex carbs/proteins seem to take up to 6 hours after eating to see them digested. I have watched this many times on the CGMS and I will see all the simple stuff crank out starting 20 to 40 minutes and peaking in 2 hours and then at 6 hours I will see another glucose bump from the complex stuff.
To fill in holes; I want fast acting stuff as is suggested with NO overhang delay. I also use M&M's as well and for bigger holes the glucose tablets. THAT stuff cranks thru fast and provides good control.
I wouldn't use M&Ms during the summer as some of the runs are plenty hot enough to melt them!! I only see 6 hours when I eat later in the evening but I think that everything slows down for me then. If I get nervous and eat more to "cover" the IOB at night, my BG tends to run up so I try to restrain myself.
Consider cutting him WAAAAY back, before he exercises instead >: > !!!
