Strategy for after school sports?

Feeling a little anxious about Jacob starting a new school ( 9th grade) and cross country in a few weeks. I've put a call in to the the school nurse to discuss a few things. I will be touching base with his coach, who has never coached a type 1 diabetic but is willing to work with Jacob. He ran cross country in 6th grade and was on MDI our strategy then was to have him test at the nurse and have a 15 ish carb snack no insulin. He usually came home from practice in the 200's because he really needed his real snack and insulin after school but he didnt want to take a shot then or risk running low with insulin on board. My plan is for him to test if he is say under 140 have a 15-20 carb snack and no bolus, he is now on the omnipod. If he is higher i will have him have the snack and a small bolus say a third of what is recommended. He will probably take the late bus home and not be home until 530 ish, eekkss more anxiety. The poor kid is going to need a grocery store in his back pack with snacks. I'm hoping the nurse will let him keep a small stash there so he can test and snack there before practice, he is pretty self conscious and not sure how open he will be. Also any suggestions for the perfect pre sport snack that is tasty, portable and works well to keep bs's stable. I know alot to ask! Any suggestions would be appreciated! Amy

I agree with the plan for snacks depending on BG and a 1/3 bolus. I've bolused during longer races when I've run up due to adrenaline/ stress and/ or overeating and the 1/3 amount works for me.

Do you know how far they run? I think that the competitions are maybe 3-5 miles but I have no idea how far they go on their training runs. I see the HS runners on the trail and they run fast!

I'd say too that you shouldn't "hope" the nurse will let him keep a small stash there. He needs to have the stash with him. I have an amphipod belt that I use to keep stuff in that is probably too dorky for someone in high school!

Hi AR, i'm thinking his training runs will be 3-5 miles as well, i will be talking to his coach this week, so i will get more details. for this summer he has been running about 2-3 miles in the am about an hour after breakfast, he has had no lows from this but his midmorning numbers have been much better, changing to afternoon will be more of a challenge but i really don't anticipate him dropping to much during his run based on past history and definitely anticipating a spike post race, adrenaline. the only time we have run a decreased basal which he really needed was mountain climbing and occasionally for a longer lawn mowing, he always carries glucose on him in a pocket, i want to find the small baggies that you use for jelly beans for him, so much more tasty than tabs. i'm sure it will all work out well but information is power so to speak, so yours would be a good brain to pick! thanks for the info! amy

I get the little bags at Hobby Lobby, the big craft store, I think they are for jewelry, beads, etc. Lately, the last 6-8 weeks maybe, I've been filling them w/ Smarties/ dextrose, in the hopes that they'll work faster although they are messier and a bit more difficult to eat b/c of the powder. I would suspect there will be plenty of adrenaline with a group of teenagers! One of my buddies ran cross country and talks about how the coach was like "don't ever fall behind..." sort of motivational things.

thanks! i am headed out to do errands this morning and there is a craft store near the pet store, jacob's other passion, his fish tank! i may be asking you more running questions, hoping for the best and a good venue for him to bond with some like minded kids and maybe open up about his D, he has a great stride i think he is a natural although not ultra competitive, he takes after his yoga mom on that one! talk soon, amy
