Well last night was pretty ■■■■■■! Everything started out fine and my sugars were doing good. Was having a drink with some friends so i was checking my sugars every hour and watching them extra carefully. Checked them around 1am and i was 102…good great wonderful…barley an hour later im passed out on the floor confused and completely out of it. My Boyfriend had to check my sugars for me and i was 37!!! I want to know how the hell my sugars can drop that far that fast!!! I mean holy crap really…I have had this disease for almost 6 years now and i still can get it right! I hate this!!!
Oh Nya its not your fault diabetes sometimes seems like it has a mind of its own seriously, maybe it could be because you needed a little snack or that you was moving around dancing could be anything to be honest.
Ive had it for 23years and sometimes out of the blue I check and I get a good number less then 5 mins later I am on 1.4 thats really low and I get to the stage I can
t walk because its safer to sit there and eat whatever I have in my bag rather then try and walk.
It must have been so scary to have passed out but thank God for your boyfriend and him knowing what to do.
I had a diabetes ed nurse tell me when you drink your liver stops putting out sugar that is normaly does all day. So you can go low because your liver is not putting that sugar in you blood.
I copy this off of WEB MD
-
While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level – sometimes causing it to drop into dangerous levels.
-
Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.
-
Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.
-
Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.
-
Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.
-
Alcohol may increase blood pressure.
-
Alcohol can cause flushing, nausea, increased heart rate, and slurred speech.
One thing to warn… Glucagon USUALLY is NOT effective for alcohol related lows… really need a glucose containing drink or gel… (gel might be easier if your having problems but you must be conscience for EITHER solution)… do NOT USE TABS… youll probably choke and they work too slow sometimes…
…Also its a good idea to have some fat/carbs in you when you drink… Least what my CDE told me is ALWAYS eat before you drink when your diabetic…
You did well checking your bs but as others have said you needed something to eat also. Whenever I’ve had a drink I snack on something small. Before going to bed I always have 15g of carb to hold me while sleeping.
What type of alcohol were you drinking? I find if I drink hard alcohol it will make my blood sugars drop quickly.
That really scares me. I’m so glad your boyfriend took care of you.
Alcohol lowers your bloodsugar, a lot.
As a college student, I did some serious testing with alcohol after I was diagnosed (I’m not kidding, I did controls and took the whole thing very seriously…)
If I was going to party like a college student, I sure as heck was going to do it right.
ONE SHOT of Hard alcohol (for me) will lower me up to 25 points in the 2-4 hours after I drink it.
Light beer, 10… Dark beers are carb-neutral… White Wine is + carbs, Red wine is about 5-10 points a glass…
Whenever I drink hard A, I make sure to mix/chase with a glass of juice or pop…I also never go to bed with a BG lower than 150 (for a beer night) or 200 (of I’ve been drinking hard A)
Usually I will wake up at about 100-120
Better to be safe than sorry…
good luck!
