Well it’s that time of year when we who are on insulin need to note the temperature we keep it at while traveling. Pictured are my two of my choices, I’ve have used both for several years.
The standard vacuum bottle is good for about 4 hrs if left in a hot car. The second is a refrigerated bottle from 4allfamily.com . The bottle is powered by a battery pack. The company sells a 20000mAh Battery pack. I chose a solar rechargeable pack. Last summer I did a practical test.. I put the bottle in my car the battery pack on the dash in the sun. After 8 hrs in the car. (Inside temp 98 degrees ) the bottle maintained a temp of of 46 degrees. (Note display on cap)
Now for the good news Amazon Prime has it on sale $25.00 less then I paid.
I think that Fiasp made an insulin pen that monitors temperature. I saw this posted on LinkedIn…"
@Insulinsaver over the counter device, saved me from taking hashtag#insulin that has gone bad, due to the heat. It is simple to use, just carry it with the insulin you use. In this video, you will see a red light flashing on the left side, on the front of the device, indicating to me that my insulin pen was exposed to temperature too high for too long. No audio alarm, thank goodness. Just glance at it before you take your next bolus with a pump or injection with a pen. Smart, continuous temperature monitoring. It is the only way to confirm whether or not insulin is usable or should be thrown out. I’ve never tried to keep insulin in my car. I do however walk around with a vial in my pocket from time to time, even when it’s hot out, my insulin seems to be fine. I never refrigerate an open bottle, just leave it in the counter.
But I do have a good water bottle that is insulated and I can leave ice water in my car for many hours and it’s still has ice, and I live in Southern California.
My point is, you can definitely go low tech, and secondly, insulin is more robust than most people think
