Sure-T versus Silhouette

I have caught on too Dave , to pull the Sure-T out carefully in a 90 degree motion .
As I see myself as a frugal Dutch gal , I resisted to use IV3000 tape after I moved the Sure-t after 2 1/2 day use ( used Nexcare tape instead ) …ofcourse NOT necessarily a smart , economical move …obviously the needle did not stay in as it is supposed to and insulin delivery was at times questionable … I have learned from my frugal( not smart ) lesson .
John , great to read, your numbers are perfect .

Butting in here, but the IV3000 through Medtronics is $65 for a box of 100. That’s the 2 1/4 x 2 1/2 size. That’s cash price, but they said my Aetna would cover it, so my part is $6, and 100 packets should last me 3 months.

Thanks, Nel and Dave for helping me so much with all my bothersome newbie questions.

Glad to be a part of the Sure-T team!! Thanks, Dave.

Tamara

Dave, had to research my records …a box of 100 CAN $ 58.80 of which CAN $ 44.10 is paid by Pharmacare, after I reach my deductable . Extended Health Benefits through our plans do not cover the remainder…in any case ; My misplaced frugality of CAN $ 14.70 is NOT even worth the time I put this response toghether…can you imagine now how my brain works !!!

OK Guys, My 14 year old son uses the silhoutte but I have to insert it in his upper buttocks. He is thin and very athletic - playing lots of sports. I just called MM and I asked for them to send me samples of the sure T. I am hoping that he can use them. He complains that the silhoutte hurts when I place it. How does the Sure T feel? I also asked for a couple of boxes of quick sets because I know he can insert them himself, but his nurse educator says they kink too easily!! He also had trouble twisting them to get them disconnected!! Oh I wish it were easier for him!! It just seems that many of you like the Sure Ts so I figure it is worth a try. I’ll let you know how they go over. THanks for all of your input. Nancy

I just switched from Silhouette to Quickset and I find it A LOT less painful. For 4 years, I did not even realize that there were other infusion sets and used mainly the upper buttocks as well.

I had problems with the Quickset kinking when I used the 9mm, but not with the 6mm cannula. So I would recommend to try the 6mm if your son is thin.

That being said, Sure T is likely the best option. I will be trying out the Sure T soon as well!

I can’t feel the Sure-T’s at all once they are in, and the 6 mm needles goes in quite easily. Last week at set change I started to insert and felt instant sharp pain. Must have been a nerve there. I just pulled it back out (it was 1/2 way in) and put it about an inch away. No problems at all.

The only other infusion sets I’ve tried were the 9 mm Soft-Sets, and these feel WAY better. I LOVE the anchor, that thing doesn’t budge at all. Several times my pump has fallen/been pulled out of my pocket and fell. Anchor caught it very securely, no problem at all. The anchor sticks through multiple showers and sweating with no tape over. I do use IV3000 over the needle part, just because the “wings” can get caught and pulled.

By day 3 I was counting hours till my set change with Soft-Sets, but with the Sure-T’s, I sometimes even forget to change until my resevoir is almost empty!! If you/he likes them, you can try a suggestion given to me by Nel Peach. She, and subsequently I, move the needle after 2.5 or 3 days. Just pull up the adhesive, grasp by the “wings” and pull out. I just move it an inch or two (using IV prep) and re-insert and cover with fresh tegaderm or IV3000. I leave the anchor part in place. This gives you about twice as much time from the same set. I only use about 50 units a day, so if I fill my 300 unit reservour full, I can get almost 6 full days. At this point I am trying to stock up on supplies in case we loose our insurance (husband probably being laid off due to reduction of force.)

Good luck and I hope the Sure-T’s feel better for him, plus he can insert them himself.

Tamara

Just started my first Sure-T set tonight - no fixed prime! I had to go through the included directions three times to make sure I wasn’t missing anything…

So far, so good but about to check my first post-prandial on the new sets… hmm…, not so good - maybe I will redo that site and see how it goes from here…

Much better now! Reading over the earlier
posts, I think my first insertion was the rare site you mentioned when the sureT needle does not poke the skin, as I was 311 post prandial! I changed it an hour ago and this time when I inserted it I actually said “ouch”, but who knows- numbers back on track again…

Do others give Amy kind of a fixed prime with a new sure-t needle (besides the regular priming to get the set ready)?

I agree Dave …I give a 0.1 u prime with a new Sure T set and when I move a set …am still testing if I require more …maybe yes ?.

PS There does not seem to be a shortage of Sure -T sets in Canada , I was told by MM Canada and by my Pharmacist …Pharmacist apologized for the glitz ( sp??) I had with receiving my requested amount …they will have my next 3 boxes av. next time .I trust their words .

OK Dave, I’m putting you to the test. Just ordered a set of Sure-T’s and I told them Dr. Dave the Sure-T man told me to get them. They said…“But of course”.

I remember reading about the “priming” with these Sure-T’s. What do those of you that use them prime?

There is no “priming” for Sure-Ts like you do with other infusion sets. Two strategies:

  1. If you change your reservoirs when you change your infusion sets, then you connect the infusion set to your reservoir and press and hold ACT until you see insulin drip from the needle tip. Then, you insert the set and you’re done.

  2. If you don’t change reservoirs when you change your infusion sets, then you connect the Sure-T (just the short part with the needle) to your existing reservoir tube and do a Fixed Prime of 3.0 units before you insert the needle into your skin. Once you see insulin dripping from the needle tip, you insert it into your skin and you’re done.

That’s what I thought John. Thanks for affirming it. (Since there is no cannula, there shouldn’t be a need for priming). Guess common sense still works.

Ya know, if memory serves me right(which I seem to have little of lately), I think I tried these in Dec. 2005 when I started pumping. As soon as I saw them, I remembered trying a sample out. Just don’t remember what my opinion of it was. I’m easy, so I got 4 boxs.

I have been testing to check if I would benefit by giving a " prime " bolus and started off with .1 u . I seem to do better with a .6 u prime , regardless of what the literature states , that it is NOT needed …( re Dave’s comment and reasoning in this discussion on October 16 ) , after I do a set change

Did anyone hear the music? I just put my first Sure-T in tonight after 4 years, and if I hadn’t been looking, I would have thought maybe I missed. I’m still waiting to feel something. Very easy. My memory now confirms that I did indeed use just one back in 2005 when I first started pumping. I just don’t remember anything about what I thougt . Guess I just went with the QS because the tubing was longer and I only had to stick 1 thing on/in me.
Since I now have the cgms and another “thing” stuck on/in me, well…bring it on. I’m past caring what’s stuck on me, as long as I get results. Life is good and I’m smiling as I sit here with my Gibson playing my music

Got this in 1966 from my guitar teacher and always wanted something lighter(this weighs a ton) and nicer and newer, but back then I couldn't afford much. Today, you would faint at how it has appreciated.

So I spent last week on the Sure-T’s (usually using Silhouettes), and must say I was not a huge fan. No problems at all with the metal needle, it was super comfortable, but I found that when changing the location of the site (using the same reservoir), I would have trouble with the needle not “staying in”, even with the IV 3000 tape (or whatever it is called…). As a result, I seemed to go through more site locations on a single reservoir then on the silhouettes. I am fairly active, and found the site pulling away, even on the first site, and with the dual locking system. I am pretty lean, not sure how that effects sureT users.

So, overall I did not see the benefit and relatively worry-free change I was hoping for. May try again at some point, but will stick with the silhouettes for now barring some huge increase in site problems…

Hello All;
First time posting here, but I must say that tonight I am trying my FIRST SureT. I have been using the quick sets for several years (about 4), and before that the sils.
I didn't get good results with the sils because of the variable angle of inserting (I used the inserter), so I tried the quicksets (again with the inserter), but have lately, for the past 6 months, been getting lousy control... even as high as "HI" on my BG meter (over 500!!)... felt just LOUSY!
So after reading alot of posts about the quick sets, I stumbled on several favorable SureT comments, so I call MM and asked for samples (they sent me 4), and tonight I am trying my first one!
Went it PERFECT!! NO pain, NO feeling, and I like the fact that they are MUCH thinner and fit alot flatter than the quicksets. Don't really like the dual sticky and the short tubing, but I have some old Sil tubing, so I might just use that instead.
We'll see how it goes!

Hope this works for you! You can order ones with longer tubing.

Let us know what you think.
