Swimming with Diabetes

Hi y’all, I’m an avid swimmer and am noticing that I am running out of energy after about an hour of working out. My blood sugar is fine and my muscles are not sore but I’m just exhausted. I swim at 6:00 am so I don’t really eat much for breakfast, I’m wondering if that’s contributing to the exhaustion and if so then any tips on what a healthy diabetic friendly breakfast would be before a workout? Currently I’m eating half of an avocado, and a Bagel Thin with some cream cheese, or just a nutritional meal replacement drink. I’m not hungry when I finish, just really tired. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Blessed Diabetic

How is your heart rate at the beggining and when you run out of energy? Sometimes I have had my heart rate too low in the mornings and my workouts are extremely slugish. I would use some caffine to get the blood flowing or the b-12 energy drinks. Also I would play with more rib sticking foods such as oatmeal. I think you need to just change one thing and see what happens. Kinda like doing a science experience. www.thediabeticcamper.blogspot.com

I would consider adding more protein to your breakfast. Also, after an hour of exercise most people (non-diabetics included) need to refuel. Consider taking a cliff gel shot or some other easy to digest food while exercising. When I trained for a triathlon I had to eat once an hour- just something small like a cliff shot but still something. Sometimes as diabetics we forget to fuel the body outside the requirements of managing our blood sugars.

I enjoy Cliff Bars and eat one before I dip in. The Mojo ones are my favorite. But I was concerned about eating while swimming, due to cramps and stuff. What the heck is a gel shot? just curious.
