I went swimming tonight for the first time since January! I went with a friend to a new community centre that's opened not far from my place. We went during a public swim so there were only two lanes open, which were "slow" and "medium", and both of which were very crowded and too slow for me. I kept running into people ahead of me so didn't get much of a workout.
Blood sugar wise ...
My blood sugar was 14.0 (252 mg/dl) when I left work around 5:00 due to some cake I had after lunch. I corrected that and when I got home had a bit to eat without testing, that would have been around 6:00. I left to go swimming at 7:30 and tested on the way only to find I was 6.0 (108 mg/dl) and had 3.5 units of insulin still on board! So I ate a 20g granola bar plus 8g of glucose tablets before going.
Since I didn't feel like it was much of a workout, and I was sooooo thirsty when I finished (need to bring a water bottle next time) I was sure I'd be high afterwards. But nope, I tested at 4.1 (74 mg/dl). I ate one glucose tablet and took my pump off. A few minutes later I was feeling low so ate another glucose tablet and kept my pump off. My pump ended up being off from about 9:00 when we finished to about 10:00 when I got home. (I swam with my pump on, though, no temporary basal rate or anything fancy like that.)
I just tested now at 11:00 and was SURE I would be high and I was 6.0 (108 mg/dl)! So I ate an apple and a piece of chocolate since I'm hungry since I didn't have much of a dinner, and will bolus for that and have some almond milk and head to bed. I think I may put a temporary -10% basal rate on overnight just in case.
Tonight was really great. I forgot how much I love swimming! I think I'll probably go again on Saturday by myself. :) I swam 1 kilometre today, which took just under an hour due to all the stopping and running into people.
