Swimming!

I went swimming tonight for the first time since January! I went with a friend to a new community centre that's opened not far from my place. We went during a public swim so there were only two lanes open, which were "slow" and "medium", and both of which were very crowded and too slow for me. I kept running into people ahead of me so didn't get much of a workout.

Blood sugar wise ...

My blood sugar was 14.0 (252 mg/dl) when I left work around 5:00 due to some cake I had after lunch. I corrected that and when I got home had a bit to eat without testing, that would have been around 6:00. I left to go swimming at 7:30 and tested on the way only to find I was 6.0 (108 mg/dl) and had 3.5 units of insulin still on board! So I ate a 20g granola bar plus 8g of glucose tablets before going.

Since I didn't feel like it was much of a workout, and I was sooooo thirsty when I finished (need to bring a water bottle next time) I was sure I'd be high afterwards. But nope, I tested at 4.1 (74 mg/dl). I ate one glucose tablet and took my pump off. A few minutes later I was feeling low so ate another glucose tablet and kept my pump off. My pump ended up being off from about 9:00 when we finished to about 10:00 when I got home. (I swam with my pump on, though, no temporary basal rate or anything fancy like that.)

I just tested now at 11:00 and was SURE I would be high and I was 6.0 (108 mg/dl)! So I ate an apple and a piece of chocolate since I'm hungry since I didn't have much of a dinner, and will bolus for that and have some almond milk and head to bed. I think I may put a temporary -10% basal rate on overnight just in case.

Tonight was really great. I forgot how much I love swimming! I think I'll probably go again on Saturday by myself. :) I swam 1 kilometre today, which took just under an hour due to all the stopping and running into people.

Good for you! You should try to find a less crowded time, if you can.

i would never do anything without testing first like eating or swimming or leaving the house, etc...
but glad you enjoyed your swim & bg's were ok
hugs

I usually wouldn't do anything without testing, but ate dinner since I'd been 14.0 an hour earlier and had just corrected (not eaten) so didn't think there was much else to do there. I would never exercise without testing, though! Eating is the only thing I will occasionally do without testing if I've tested 30-60 minutes previously and am not eating something ridiculous.

I used to try swimming during the "adult" swims but they are later in the evening and after finishing the buses used to run only every hour, which was so annoying. This is a different community centre so I'm going to see if they have adult swimming at a better time for me.

swimming in a new place can be tough. But it sounds like once it thins out, you will have a great place for doing it. I wish you good fortune

sounds great! I have to go swimming.. it's such a great exercise :)

I am truely blessed to have a swimming facility only a few hundred meters from my house. Glad to see you got back in the water.
