If you want to achieve tight control, you need to know what your BS is doing. The only way to do that is by testing.
I continued to test a lot when using a CGMS. Although my Dexcom is a great tool, it is not 100% accurate and I test with a meter before making any treatment decisions.
I was told this as well. I believe it was a)for my benefit (so I could see what was happening to my BG throughout the whole day, not just at meal times, so it would be easier to set and adjust basal rates) and b)a way for me to prove to my doctor that I was serious about going on pump therapy.
I’ve now been pumping over 3 years. I test an average of 5-6x a day. But there are days where I test upwards of 10x. It all depends on how I feel/what I’m doing/hormones, etc etc etc. Point is, I test more than I did on injections.
I did ten tests per day. I still do seven or eight while wearing a Dexcom.
When I get up
Before breakfast, if the prior test > 1hour old
Three hours after breakfast
Before Lunch, if the prior test > 1hour old
Three hours after lunch
Before supper, if the prior test > 1hour old
Three hours after supper
Bed time if I have had a bedtime snack.
Bottom line, you need to test before any insulin dose, FOR YOUR SAFETY.
I enter those values in my Dexcom and it stays within about 10% at all times. Some would say this is too much, I believe it is safe!
I have been on the pump for about 4 months now. I usually test about 5 times a day, depending on how I'm feeling. I also thought that 8 times a day was a bit much. I think I did that for about the first week, then I got into a routine. I'm sure once you are on the pump, you will figure out what is good for you.
