Have you read this book?? I have and just wanted to spread the word to all of you that haven’t heard about it. It is written by Sheri R. Colberg, PhD and Steven V. Edelman, MD. This book has been very inspirational to me. Another one that I most recently bought is called “Type 1 Diabetes” written by Ragnar Hanas, MD, PhD. Every time I went to the book store all I could find was books on Type 2 or books about people just being diagnosed. I found this book covered all topics with the disease. Check them out!!!
Stef- Thanks for the 411. Sounds good, I’ll have to check them out.
Interesting. Is this a new book?
I have been looking for some D books to read lately. Thanks!
What were your favorite secrets?
The Book “50 Secretes…” is very inspirational. I found that it gave me guidance on how to take care of myself and treat my diabetes. One part of the book that I found helpful was learning how to prevent bad lows. Another was when they discussed how estorgen and progesterone released during the second half of the menstrual cycle can decrease the effects of insulin (which explains why I get crazy BG that time of the month). “Estrogen makes your body less senstive to insulin”… I didn’t know that prior to reading this book I found that when reading it, it answered alot of my questions and I think it’s a great reference to have.
The other book “Type 1 Diabetes” covers issues like Side effects of insulin treatment "Pain, Insulin Leakage, Blocked Needles, Bruises after injections, Fatty Lumps, etc. Nutrition "Absorption of carbohydrates **ICE CREAMM!!! =) and how it increases BG not until 45-90min after eating it!! I didn’t know that… I found that tip to be helpful since I heart ice cream and can’t ever figure out why 2hrs after my sugar is fine than like 5 hrs its like crazy high…
Those are a few reasons why I like these books… another one I have is called Outsmart DIABETES - by Editors of Prevention Health Books. This one is good cause it has a 7 Day Low Carb Meal Plan (plan on tryin this week) This book pretty much talks about complications and how to prevent and live well with the disease.
Thank you for these suggestions
My pleasure!
Hello Stef:
Able to explain in more detail your thoughts? I know of PhD Colberg but was not… overly impressed with her original book “Diabetic Athlete”. What can you tell us of the newest//latest work for those of us unlikely to experience the estrogen/progesterone issues… personally I mean ?
Stuart
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I like the book and found it to be very helpful. I’m not going to get into great detail about her book as I don’t have the time. These are just suggestions for those who are looking for some books to read. I Just thought I’d throw it out there and wouldn’t mind hearing of other peoples suggestions on different diabetic books as well. BTW this book doesn’t cover one topic like “Diabetic Athlete” it discusses many issues. The ones that I mentioned above were just a few that I found helpful. I wasn’t going to talk about the ENTIRE book… that would spoil it for the rest.
Have a good day
Is it a book easy to read ? As english is not my native language, if it is too much technical, I’ll fall asleep while reading the book !!!
It is pretty easy…not technical at all =)
Thanks. It is in my shopping cart ! I have “The diabetic athlete” from the same author and like it.
Cool… let me know what you think when you read it!!
I will have to check out that book. I am wondering if it documented the longest a person has survived on insulin. Let me know.
Frank
I’ll definately check this out. I can’t get enough inspiration…!
Borders has a pretty good variety of books on Diabetes, just an FYI
Thanks for sharing this!
We don’t have Borders in Canada… but we do have Indigo and Chapters which is pretty much the same thing… Next time I’m in the states I’ll have to go there and check it out!!
