The Crazy Making Merry Go Round

Nice to meet a fellow Phoenician!
Carl, thanks I will check that link out and thanks!!

Hi,

I went on the Atkins diet about 5 years ago, when I first found out I had very high insulin and was gaining weight. I didn’t lose a lot, even though I was exercising, but I looked thinner for some reason. I felt better too, with more energy and feeling more balanced.

I have Dr. Atkin’s Diabetic Revolution, and when I went to the ADA about 4 years ago, they got all dramatic about how bad Atkin’s diet is…I said, “How come I feel so good and my sugar cravings are gone??” There were times I didn’t even feel like eating. I packed a huge salad daily for work, with lettuce (greens, not iceberg), tomatoes, other veggies, nuts, and either chicken, turkey, tuna or salmon on it. I only used olive oil for the dressing. They told me that was awful “You need carbs!” and I said, “But I AM eating carbs…good carbs…vegetables…not REFINED CARBS” and they said, “It’s a myth diabetics can’t eat everything, you can…in moderation.” Well, that is like telling an alcoholic, “You can have one drink, not .” It sets up the cravings for me, and it makes me think of sweets even in my sleep.

Atkins was slammed horribly, but he implicated too much sugar being a bigger cause of cardiovascular disease than fat. He knew about insulin, and how blood sugar and insulin can contribute to the vessels constricting and causing hypertension.

Thanks for the information about the insulin, I will stick to a good low carb diet and watch my blood sugar.

I was on Metformin, but it gave me the runs. I am meeting with my doc this week and asking him if I can try the Extended release formula. He had said my insurance won’t cover it, but I found out that Walmart and Target have it, 30 500mg tabs for $4.00. I am willing to spend the small amount of money to find out…I was on the Metformin for 3 months. I did notice some things, like you mentioned the liver not dumping sugar into the blood…I did not wake up with that horrid queasy stomachache. Also, it stopped me from waking up at say, 3 or 4am. I also felt less anxious. I really wish I could take it, and I am going to insist my doc gives me a script to try the XR.

And, you are so right about being able to eat more food and not feeling deprived. That is why I cannot do Weight Watchers. It is too much obsessing with food. I know people who were on it, and they would say things like, “Well, if I have a piece of pizza, I can still have a small piece of cake today and still lose weight…”

I think you are correct about the only way to lose weight is the low carb dieting. When I tried the ADA diet years ago, I thought, “Why am I doing this, it makes no sense!”

So I already know about a lot of low carb foods, like some tofu is almost all protein and low carb, and how refined flour products are just like eating sugars.

I am hoping that now that I am doing low carb, I will lose. I think exercise helps. I had been doing a half hour a day, and am back on that now. I want to get up to an hour and really jump start my body.

thanks for the heads up about Januvia. I read some of the other drugs cause weight gain, heart failure, renal failure and a host of other goodies. It is surprising some of those made it on the market.

Thanks for all the information!!!

Twixcooki, since I have been diagnosed 3 years ago, I changed my lifestyle. Dropped about 80 pounds, stopped drinking any alcohol at all (damn, loved those shirazes and merlots!), and do regular exercise.

I eat well, but carefully. Only whole grain products, very low fat meats and not much of them, and a ton of veggies… chit… I could almost become a vegan if it wasn’t for the fact I love my deer meat too much… lol.

A1C is great, my cholesterol has never been better, and blood pressure is great. BUT, what a pain in the buttkus to get there; although it is easier to stay there now that the big problem has been solved.

Remember, you can’t control your diabetes, but you can control your blood sugars, and you can affect the negative long term effects of the disease. Will you avoid future problems with kidneys, heart, amputation or blindness? Who knows, maybe not, but I am certain that if you don’t try and control stuff, you are much likely to get these things then if you did. Or at least sooner.

Best of luck.

I know you worked very hard to achieve that…I found a recipe for vegan whipped cream. It is

Vegan Whipped “Cream”
1 1/2 cups (about 12 ounces) extra firm silken tofu
1 cup organic sugar-----But ------Substitute a small amount of Spenda if you do well with that.
1/4 cup water
2 teaspoons vanilla

Mix in a blender or food processor until smooth, and voila, you have two cups of whipped “cream” to start fooling around with.

What I meant to write is, don’t use the sugar…

Many diabetics have thyroid problems & soy isn’t good for anyone with thyroid issues. Lots of info out there about how soy isn’t the wonder food it’s marketed as.

My allergist says that soy is going to overtake peanuts as the number 1 allergen because of its overuse! I am allergic to soy–it is nearly impossilble to buy food w/o soy–even fresh meat is not safe unless you buy grass/range fed because they feed the foodstuffs soy too! grr… Upside–grass/range fed tastes better

You guys are right…my daughter is allergic to peanuts, and soy is in the bean family too. Hydrolyzed vegetable protein is usually soy.

I use a lot of soy, because I am allergic to dairy. I am able to tolerate it, but I can appreciate food allergies, because of having to avoid dairy. I have such a limited diet…

And I agree about meat…I don’t want to eat an animal that wasn’t raised like a real living being. I wonder sometimes if all the growth hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs are causing us to be bigger people than we are. I stopped eating pork, because pigs are as smart as dogs and are treated inhumanely, and I only buy cage-free, drug free eggs. I only buy beef that has no antibiotics, and such too. I figure it costs more, but then I am not buying soda pop and other expensive goodies at all.

Wow, I give you credit, working while raising 4 kids!!! Give yourself a pat on the back!
