The future of diabetes treatment..... Something you may want to see

Most of this stuff is kind of technical but I believe these guys are really going to make this happen sooner or later. I am also a big advocate for Dr Faustman but I think her research may be more of a long shot to help the entire diabetic population. Anyway whether you believe in a cure or not I think you should really take a look at what these guys are accomplishing… Let’s hope for a insulin independent future and a well new year.

I agree that this is technical and way over my biological knowledge. I did find that when he said "unlimited supply" (of stem cells...) it reminded me of Johnny Rotten:

Which is probably the attitude he will need to market the stuff in the US?

Money. That's all it takes........maybe we should stop building bombs. The cost of diabetes care is staggering.

"stop building bombs'
That would be nice, we are too immature a country.

Dr. Faustman is moving the ball forward even if it doesn't pan out. I don't see why the autoimmune attack won't get solved eventually but it might take 200 years of sporadic, hit or miss research!

Umm the last I heard we don't live 200 years.. All kidding aside what Viacyte is doing will make the immune attack not a factor. Even better if Injecting some BCG and getting a stem cell replacement therapy could maybe work together. My doubt in Faustman's research is not whether she will halt the immune attack but more whether our pancreas will be able to regenerate at a therapeutic level that alleviates insulin dependence. As I sit back and experience my body and soul be devoured by diabetes I have to believe in a better future treatment. I'd love to be first in line for this.

I wonder is how Viacyte and DRI differ because both appear to be working on same thing of encapsulating beta cells.

Don,

Viacyte is using stem cells which appears to offer them an endless supply of cells.. Hopefully no more excuses that they can't meet the need. The DRI is still working with human cadavers I think. I am not sure about the encapsulation differences. I'd love to see the DRI on the same page as Viacyte as I live in Florida and the DRI is about an hour or so away for me. I used to donate to them but haven't in a while. Many companies are working on various versions of Islet transplants using stem cells, pig cells... encapsulation but I believe Viacyte will be the first to deliver the goods. They are heavily supported in California and to my knowledge the most advanced with their therapy. The question is will it be enough to offer insulin independence in humans? LCT though already in human trials for a while has not been able to offer insulin independence and that is really the only truly way to more or less be done with diabetes. Having some insulin production back is better then nothing but if your looking for true freedom that ain't gonna cut it.

i'd be happy to just go in and get a Injection of New Cells every month or Qtrly or whenever the old one's get eaten up and Just Keep up with the Auto Immune Disease , until a Discovery is found to destroy it..

Identifiying the Causing Gene's is another Major step.. For those having Children
and Next is find ways to destroy them, while the Baby is In progress
