Hey guys!
Newbie here, but wondering if anyone has any knowledge they could part with!
I'm type 1 diabetic and take insulin via pens. I'm going travelling around europe this summer for abour 3weeks to a month. My main problem will be keeping my insulin cold when travelling as i will only have my backpack with me :/
Has anyone encountered this problem before, if so...any help?
Any response is appreciated!
Cheers, Chris
frio bags keep your insulin pens cold and travel well. they sell them on amazon and probably pharmacies and costco and stuff. have a great time!
thats the link.
Frios work great. One thing to remember is that they cool by evaporation and must be kept in a part of your backpack where it can breathe. No waterproof compartments.
They do not cool your insulin as much as a refrigerator, but they definitely keep it cool enough for a month long trip. I never put my insulin in hotel refrigerators because of the possibility that it could freeze. Or the possibility that I would forget the insulin when I checked out.
Thanks! Ordered one for a try out before i go. Was only £12 for a large one so testing it to see how much it will hold, can't go wrong for that price really!

Hi, I may be late answering this, but I wouldn't worry too much about refrigerating your insulin:
My husband and I are both diabetic. When we travel, we usually don't refrigerate our spare insulin, we just take care not to freeze or overheat it, as said above.
The only time that my husband spoilt his spare insulin while travelling, was when he forgot it in the car for a day - but o.K., this was in Las Vegas in June at 38°C/100F :-)! And even thereafter, he still could use it, he just needed about double the dose, if I remember right.
And another one from my daily experience: insulin does work for at least 6 weeks unrefrigerated. I have LADA for one year now, and this was discovered when my HbA1c was only 6.4, so until now, I'm on tiny doses, and usually throw away my cartridges after a month when they are still half full. Once or twice, I forgot to change them and had them in my pen for 6 weeks (at room temperature, not warmer, admittedly) and the insulin still worked.
Hi Chris
I live in a very, very hot city here in Brasil. I have 2 frio bags for my insulin pens. One I keep in my room with the Lantus pen that is in use. The other I keep in my bag with the Novorapid that I must use during the day. It works wonderful! The only thing is that, as Laddie said, it must breath to work. As often as I can, I keep it out of my purse or keep my purse open to let the frio bag evaporate.
