This happens with me usually. I am T1 on basal and bolus regime. I wake up at 5.00 Am and go out for walk + exercise including 500 metre running.
Yesterday when I went out I was 92 when I came back I tested it 210 before breakfast, another day I was 75 when I tested before breakfast It was 151, but sometimes it does not rise . On a particular day. it was 89 but when I came back it was 91. I may add that i do walking for 30 monthuses 10 minutes jogging/running and 20 mintues stretch exercise . When I took one one Humalog after after waking up, my sugar chaned from 90 to 61 mg. I test immediately after waking up.
What should I do.
I buy sticks so it will be expensive for me to test everyhour.
Now When I come back from walking exercise I usually talk short within 30 mintues. I take 3+4+4 Humalog and 10 units lantus. Low carb diet upto 170 gm carbohydrates. I test usually 3-4 times a day
Should I talk breakfast short within 2 hours after waking up [ this includes the exercise time] to reduce the possibility of much fluctuation.
Try to keep attention to details and log them all. Sometimes we just leave something out of the equation and can't really understand what is happening.
Doing exercise in the morning can be difficult but with knowledge everything is possible. What about dawn effect? Does it affect you normally?
I found out that when I workout without insulin on board tend to go up. You could try a little snack + bolus before going out to exercise.
I’ve had similar changes. Sometimes I need more insulin and other times I run low. I’ve tried to see if its related to PM exercise the night before which keeps my AM BG rise down, but I haven’t been able to predict it yet. Though most times I’ll rise with early AM exercise.
-Perhaps watch whether sprinting vs jogging has an effect due to more of a release of hormones with higher intensity.
-Carry glucose tabs and if you feel “unusual” take 1. Hopefully 4 grams wont raise you too much but it will reassure you if you are fearful that it’s one of the days you’re going low.
-See if there’s a pattern. If you’re doing days back-to-back is your sugar better as the days go on.
Keep up the good work-you’ll get it.
You are stacking variables. Bernstein recommends not exercising in the morning because the stress of exercise when combined with Darn Phenomenon (DP) can lead to unpredictable and exaggerated blood sugar readings. And then you are not eating before exercise, which makes it even worse.
You could try eating breakfast and bolusing before morning exercise, but you may just find exercise in the morning is just too difficult to manage.
