little confused....
in the morning when i wake up my blood sugar ranges from 90 to 110 but after returning from my morning walk( jog) it hikes to 220 or even more.... is it normal?????
or is there any way out to deal with it????? please help... :-/
tired of managing diabetes( type 1) and taking insulin injections...
Could be the "dawn effect" which is the tendency of BG to go up at one specific time in the morning. This normally happens before, during or after waking up.
As always I would do some experiments to find the best solution: try to understand how your BG fluctuates and bolus accordingly. Would you say it happens every day in a regular fashion?
Some people says they can reach a better control if the exercise is preceded by snack+bolus.
Cmon let's switch that :-( to a prettier :-)
I agree with Rick on this, probably Darn Phenomenon (DP). And if you don't bolus and eat before your exercise, it will be even worse. Dr. Bernstein actually recommends that we avoid exercise in the morning because of DP.
Hello, did a little research and found this - http://www.joslin.org/info/why_do_blood_glucose_levels_sometimes_go_up_after_physical_activity.html
Good luck!
Nice one red1studio!
In the end could be either the dawn effect or the exercise (or both).
I find that with long and aerobic exercises (eg walking, housework) my BG tends to go down. On the other hand, with anaerobic exercise (eg heavy weightlifting) my BG tends to go up. But as always everyone has its own D!
Just make some experiments isolating one variable at a time and see for yourself. You could avoid exercising one morning and test for example.
A good resource is the book "The Diabetic Athletes Handbook" by Sheri Colberg. She also has some great articles on her web site.
Gonna buy it!
Tks Brian
Hi sweety1691:
Yes - what you're experiencing is "normal" from a diabetes perspective. Every diabetic responds to different exercises differently. For example, if I run for 60 mins my BG drops 10-20 points. However if I mountain bike for the same amount of time it rises by about 40 points. Hence, I will inject one unit of Regular in advance of my ride and it will keep my BG flat. As per what others have said in response to your post, you just need to experiment and then adjust accordingly.
Christopher
