Type 1 & General Anesthesia

Yes, mine was in the US too. I had the right to refuse the insulin, but they kept insisting that I would die without their insulin. So they said that they were required to give me medication if it was necessary to keep me alive.

I tried to explain to them that I already had Lantus in me… frustrating, but eventually I got two notes on my file:
(1) defiant pateint
(2) from the endo: Patient should manage all of her own diabetes care.
Phew!

Let’s here it for defiant patients!

Something I’ve been warned about & want to share. SOP in ERs for diabetics is giving glucose (unless the patient is clearly DKA). This is a throwback to the days when most PWD were admitted for hypos. Perfectly fine if a person is there for this, but if you’re not–watch out. No, they don’t typically test you first. Before they stick anything in your arm in an ER, ask what it is.

If you get any flack about anything while hospitalized, demand to speak with the hospital administrator. They’ll do anything to avoid the threat of a lawsuit.
