Type 2---frustrations_ I have never been obese

Whey do people assume that since you are a type 2 that you have been obese?
at jury duty, where you me new people, lunch brake. The group wanted to do pizza, which I declined. I am type 2 doing diet and exercise only. One of the group came up to me, : I know what your are dealing with I use to weigh 400 pounds. : I wish I could have been more polite. But I said I never weighed 400 pounds. My BMI is 29, pretty much as it has always been.

There are so many variations of diabetes, why do most think you are just fat. )

For me I am just content that I am off meds. ))

thanks got that off my chest.

Probably because it's drummed out by the press all the time that the vast majority of T2's are obese. Thus whenever the general public hear the word diabetic they immediately think it's self induced issue for porkers.

I recently spoke to a dad of a girl in her teens who was diagnosed T1. All this crap from the press and grief from others caused her to keep lowering and skipping her insulin doses solely so she could lose weight by flushing the sugars. A kind of diabetic bulimia. She died of DKA before she was 18. He almost had me in tears while he opened his heart on the situation.

Many of us become hard skinned enough to take it and use it as a way to educate the idiots saying it. Sadly some of us can't handle that and it frankly makes me get furious with the situation but there is little we can do at the moment other than whatever we can. The fight is with all the mass media organisations on the planet, and while we have a voice, getting it through to them is a major climb we need to overcome as a general diabetic community. The press meanwhile love to always have a bad guy and blaming all diabetics for bringing it on themselves is an easy target for them to keep on preaching.

i agree with nyadach. the press does type 2 (or type 1) no favours. im sorry that you have to deal with the ignorance. at least they were being sympathetic and not all, well, you know, you can get rid of that....lots of people in my family were/are type 2 and theyve all heard everything.
when i was diagnosed with type 1 as an adult, my (now ex)boss jokingly waved her finger at me and said, all those sweets, emily, see what you did! i wanted to punch her right in the face! and she was lovely and clever and just an all round great person, but you get people talking about D and they dont know WHAT theyre talking about!

I have type 2 and have a bmi of 19. Metformin, diet, and exercise changes did nothing to lower my fasting bs so now I’m starting lantus. So frustrating.

I have Type 2 and a BMI of 20.....I have always been thin, exercised regularly, ate well (some junk....but seldom). It's the media that does us injustice.
I've even had a diabetes educator once say to me "Type 2? pffft...that's nothing".
You better get used to it....because THAT attitude is not going away anytime soon!
There's a group here for thin Type 2.
Hugs....I TRULY understand your pain.

Have you been tested, Gail, to make sure you are not, in fact LADA/Type 1?

Type 2 here, BMI about 23. 3 kinds of insulin.

As horrible as the situation is, here's what makes it even worse: there is beginning to be evidence that the excess weight associated with T2 is not a cause of diabetes, but rather that both are results of the same underlying cause. In other words, the weight is a symptom.

And if that turns out to be true, it won't make the slightest difference. The perception that T2 is caused by obesity is so deeply entrenched in the popular press and the popular mind that I don't know that we'll EVER get rid of it.

Yes. Not positive for Any antibodies. I have been able to keep my post meal bs within target but my castings are always between 100-115 no matter why I do.

Gail, most of us would kill for "post meal bs within target "but" fastings always between 100-115!"

LOL

However, bear in mind that antibody tests are not 100% diagnostic. Close, yes. Perfect, no.

I have people look at me and say that I must have lost lots of weight and be cured. I was plump but never obese. I was in my early 30s when diagnosed but looking back I was probably T2 in my 20s. Possibly never really returned to normal after my first bout of gestational in my early 20s.

I also have no antibodies although my pancreas is functioning at the very bottom of normal. I actually find people's ignorance scary. I figure if it can happen to people like us who don't "appear" to be T2 then how many others of us are out there that are undiagnosed and rotting? Since even drs. have this preconceived notion that T2=obesity they may not be testing people in the 30s who are trim. My current endo says that the reason I am T2 is I have internal fat that isn't evident when you look at me. So I am like obese but wear about the smallest size clothes available? Seriously, there are some clothing lines that don't make sizes small enough for me but I'm internally and invisibly obese?

I think I may have the same problem. I am skinny fat . I am now exercising. I’ve never been big but now tip the scales at 107
