Type I and juicing?

Do any Type I’s out here juice fruits and veggies? And if so, how do you manage your BG’s, and do you have recipes with carb content? The idea of juicing appeals to me-- fruits and vegetables, pureed to deliciousness (and a clever way to ingest more of them!) but if I stop by the juice bar to pick something up, I have no idea how to bolus for such a drink? Just a curious question. Thx!

I think that it’s a great idea but I am totally lazy so I drink lots of V8. The “antioxidant flavor” has tons of vitamins, like 2 or 3x as much as the regular kind. I can only imagine what sort of turbo healthy stuff you could whip up if you were using fresh goodies? I like it for lows too, as it is mellower than fruitier juices. I don’t usually get nearly the same spiky response out of V8 as I do out of sugarier stuff.

Well, I was very pleased to see that you are juicing fruits and veggies, that is not how I immediately interpreted your title. But I guess, my mind just assumes the worst and I apologize.

If you wish to drink juiced fruits and veggies, remember that juicing results in a state where the fruits and veggies are as digestible as possible (cooking may make them more nutritious and digestible) and hence you probably should consider the carbs in fruits and veggies closer to “simple” carbs than complex carbs. Remember, partially chew a veggie like a carrot and it will pass through you almost undigested. The hardest part is that if you don’t know what is going into the drink at the juice bar, you have no idea how to count it. So consistency is probably your friend. When it is quiet, ask to monitor everything that goes into your favorite drink, measure by measure, cup by cup. Then use that to estimate the count and just always order that drink. Then just make adjustments.

I don’t think juicers are a very good way to consume fruits and vegs. Most juicers extract out the solids - which means they extract out most of the fiber. And the juice that is left is faster acting carb. Seems better to me to eat them in a non-juiced way, so you get the fiber and slower carb effect. (Plus juicers are a pain to clean up).

Thannks everyone for the responses! Would respond to each and every post, but I’m sick, and heading back home to bed for now. Blech. The V8 sounds like a great idea, and maybe I will look into some juicing recipes that have carb count info–thanks danny for the carrot juice nutritional info. I realize the fiber is extracted, but unfortunately I have a terrible stomach and sometimes solid fruits aren’t very kind to me. I too agree whole form is more nutritious, but for some occaisions I may like juicing! Have a good one everyone
