Type 1s need to replace basal insulin also, which is the insulin you need every hour in order to survive. This is in addition to bolus insulin, insulin needed to cover food. If a Type 1 is disconnected from their pump for a few hours even if they do not eat, their bloodsugars will skyrocket. Not sure how long a Type 1 can go without basal insulin but doubt if they could survive more than a couple of days without it.
