Well, I guess this type of thing is why I keep some Lantus around.
I was supposed to pick up pump cartridges today and completely forgot. So I went to refill my pump tonight and ... yep, no cartridges.
I don't have enough insulin left in my pump to get me through the night. So my choices are to either do tiny shots of Humalog (I use Apidra in my pump but don't have any pens) throughout the night or to take some Lantus.
I think I'm going to do the latter because I really don't feel like waking up every few hours and, knowing me, I'd sleep through the alarm and end up in trouble.
Only downside is getting back on the pump after a day of Lantus is kind of annoying because it takes forever to wear off.
Judging from past experience my control on MDI is horrible. My control today has been pretty good other than tonight when I spiked to 14.5 (261 mg/dl) for no reason I can discern and took a few hours to come down (still am not really fully down, actually). Hopefully the pharmacy is open tomorrow so I won't have to do this for too long!
Wow - went into edit my post - and DELETE. Duh - it's been awhile since I posted a Tudiabetes - so thing have changed (e.g. no message saying - do you really want to delete this post). So, here I go again. When I was MDI, I split my Lantus into two shots - found it kept me at a more even keel so to speak. Glad to see that you have Lantus for this little "pump break". I'm lucky that I can manage my diabetes with both methods. As you can see from my latest blog post - I've been going thru' some little hiccups with my pump. Luckily I can manage well either way - but maybe that's due to being a diabetic for most of my life? Not sure. Just know - poor man's pump - aka MDI (multiple dosage injections) and pump - I get same results - but the pump sure does make life easier most of the time for me. I feel very spoiled to be on a pump - but that will soon change when I retire - with no insurance from work to pay for it. So planning my strategy now - and see if I can afford private insurance - or Quebec will finally go the route of some other provinces - with a pump program. We do have one here in Quebec - finally came thru' in Fall 2011 - but only for under 18 year olds. Darn - could I pass as an 18 year old? NOT - there is no miracle wrinkle cream on the market yet - let's see if adhesive tape can pull them back. LOL
I used MDI for two years and used to split my Lantus as well. My basal rate on my pump varies a lot throughout the day, and I think Lantus (since it is almost flat) just couldn't cover my needs properly. Even with a split dosage the only way I could wake up with a blood sugar below 11 mmol/L was to get up at 3:00 AM and take a few units of Humalog. This is the main reason I went on the pump, although if I went back to MDI for some reason I'd have to find another way of dealing with it (waking up every night, or maybe using NPH or something). Splitting my dose DID help a lot with highs of 12 - 20 mmol/L I used to get in the evening once Lantus wore off (when I was only taking it once at night).
