Weight Gain

Hi All,

finally saw my endo (after 2 1/2 months). I am now 22 weeks pregnant.

He was very happy with my A1C which had dropped from 5.1 to 4.6. Told me I should write a book! :) Hahaha... as if I had time...

Need to raise the thyroid meds based on my last results, which I'd already done (it's 3 weeks since the last testing).

But I've only gained about 1 lb since he saw me last 2 1/2 months ago, and a total of around 4 lbs so far. Did anyone not gain weight and still be fine? From my readings (I am a geek), lack of weight gain in pregnancy is not an issue so long as the mother is eating a healthy diet (which I am). I was not light to start off with (about 15 kg above my "ideal" weight). So I started the pregnancy at about 82 kg and am currently about 83.5 kg. Baby seems to be perfectly on track as far as growth goes.

I don't think I can go eating a lot more than I'm eating without blood sugars going more haywire than they're already going.... and I do eat to satifaction (mainly low carb, but with occassional treats)...

Hi there, wow that is an amazing a1c! I hope you don't mind me asking... do you have a heck of a lot of hypos or are you just constantly at the right side of range? I am in awe.

Last pregnancy I started about the same amount above my ideal weight and like you, gained only a few kg over the entire pregnancy - after pregnancy I was lighter than I started :) This time (I'm 24 weeks) I've gained 1kg so far.

All the very best and huge congrats.

Just chiming in about the weight gain - in my first pregnancy (I did not have D, if that matters), I gained hardly any weight until about 25 weeks, then started gaining about 1-2 pounds a week until about week 38, when I started losing a little bit again. I am a normal weight to begin with, and I was eating a TON during pregnancy, my metabolism was just cranking, I guess. My docs were fine with it because the baby was growing appropriately.

So I think you are ok, as long as baby looks good, which it sounds like s/he is! And, for what it's worth, as much as I thought I was wolfing down the food when pregnant, I ate even more while breastfeeding - I felt like a teenage boy - constantly hungry, eating myself out of house and home! And I lost all the baby weight quickly.

This pregnancy, so far (I'm 11 weeks) I've lost about 5 lbs, but i've had some crazy morning sickness which is playing a part. I'm eating like crazy again (low carb, D appropriate foods of course) and this time, I'm trying to enjoy it. It's a special time in our lives where we get a little leeway in eating, so live it up, as much as a diabetic can, ha ha!

congrats and enjoy :)
