We need more details to help you out, Allie. What makes you think you have diabetes? Let’s start there.
I think you might be right…? Im just kidding. that was sarcastic and rude. We would need a lot of details to help you. Have you asked a doctor or a medical professional about your concerns? Thats a good place to start. Being that most all of us have (or know someone that has) Diabetes, we can at least point you in the right direction with greater detail. Let us know so we can help…
Surely that is better than suddenly waking up and thinking you DON’T have diabetes.
When I was young, I would always dream about flying. Now I’ll sometimes dream about not having diabetes. Maybe Allie is dreaming?
It’s actually for millions of others. I’ve had Type I since July 1985. LoL This was a discussion opening dialogue from people with diabetes to others who are newly diagnosed or thinking that it might be a possibility in their near future. Too often people are scared out of their minds and fail to react in time…until it’s too late ;( It’s not 1985 and there are a lot more options than there used to be.
If this discussion were to be published as an article in a new diabetes magazine (promoting TuDiabetes.com) giving the perspectives of people living with diabetes. Call it an evolution (since it’s illegal to start a revolution). But I must say that there has yet to be a magazine that isn’t plagued with Big Pharmaceutical trash and complete disregard for what the people say. Diabetes Health came pretty close!
What would you suggest? I do agree with you on seeing a doctor. That’s without compromise.
Here’s what I should have included with the original discussion…
Twenty-five years ago this week I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. It is likely that I could have been diagnosed twenty-six or even twenty-seven years ago if signs had been recognized. They say hindsight is 20/29, This is about you and yours and what can be done today if…
First and foremost are the signs of diabetes. Fatigue, excessive thirst, weight loss, insatiable hunger, blurred vision - the list goes on and on but those are the most apparent and easiest to recognize. If you have sustained a higher than normal blood glucose long enough that your body has started depleting your fat stores for energy – you may be spilling ketones. You will recognize this by an odor much like fruit or acetone in the breath.
If any of these signs are seeming familiar your first plan of action should be to see your doctor immediately! Beyond that advice you can get yourself a glucose urine strip. This is a noninvasive way to see if your urine hasg glucose in it. It is important to see if glucose is spilling into the urine because this indicates that the glucose in the blood is too high. The urinalysis strip will indicate a color telling you how much glucose, if any, is in the urine.
If you have been noticing symptoms of diabetes you should make an appointment to see your doctor. Twenty-five years ago when I was diagnosed the options were limited. Nowadays there are many companies exploring options to arrest or slow the progression of Type I diabetes.
One of these companies is Bayhill Therapeutics, http://www.bayhilltherapeutics.com/ The company is currently conducting Phase I/II trials of its Type I diabetes treatment called BHT-3021. Results of this trial were supposed to be available in the first part of 2009. Does anybody know where it stands?
Another company who has been quite successful in the generic market is Teva Pharmaceuticals, http://www.tevapharm.com/.Having partnered with Andromeda Biotech Ltd., Diapep277 is now being tested in Phase III trials. The trials are being conducted in 100 medical centers in North America, Europe, and Israel.
Dianyd Medical, http://www.diamyd.com/docs/About.aspx?section=about , a Swedish company has been working on a Type I diabetes vaccine for a few years. I know that a few years ago they had begun a clinical trial that got off to a bad start but I think they were able to rectify the situation and start over.
Finally in my proverbial ‘bag of tricks’ there is the news coming from ToleRX Immune Response, http://www.tolerx.com/index.php.They are currently in Phase 3 testing the drug called Defend2. Looks promising!
My point in writing this is that I want people to be aware of the signs of diabetes. The earlier you catch diabetes – the better off you will be in the long run.
What advice do you have for others who might be fretting over the possibility of a houseguest that never leaves? Aka – diabetes.
Too much info to process creates fear. How about…If your skinnier that ever and you have to pee all the time… and when someone says just pee in a cup, and you need a gallon jug, you may have diabetes.
If you think you do GO TO THE DR AND LET HIM RUN A TEST TO TELL YOU WHETHER YOU DO OR NOT!
Well I know that you are type 1 I use to read your blog all the time and then you fell of the map. Glad to see you back. did I read that you had a kidney transplant? Hope all is well
Well…Dont I feel like an arse!!! Oh darn! I got and accepted your Friend Request! Thanks BTW!
Allie, what makes you think that you would have been alive, if you had Type 1 that long prior to being dxd without using Insulin? I would think that it takes some time for enough beta cells to be destroyed in order to show obvious symptoms. But 2 years?
Eating some normal high carb foods/drinks every day is the norm for most Kids/young Adults even 50 years ago, if it was affordable to the Family or to the Kids themselves.
Over 60 years ago Richard’s Mom as an example, was a Good cook and baker. So he ate high carb foods almost daily, not knowing of course. It was Very obvious that something was seriously wrong with him. I mean little Kids are normally cranky, irritable, thirsty and sleepy especially during the hot weather but he was eyond that.
I have wondered how long a new Diabetic (Child/Young Adult) who was not dxd., could go before later stage DKA would show it’s Terror.
Okay, I forgot the “honey-moon” phase which complicates things. I was 3 when dxd. so I don’t remember any of that. My Mom took me immediately to our country Dr. when she noticed the signs since she already had 2 young Diabetic Kids.
Interesting topic anyways. Hopefully some informative links turn up. I hope that you are feeling much Better.
" What if I think I have diabetes ?" …exactly the thoughts I had , Jan . 1983 …and I went to my Doc 3 days later and said : I think I have diabetes…peeing, thirsty , not sleeping . losing weight , itchy ( at… you know where ) , eyes funky , drinking lots of H2O and eating Christmas gift chocolates .
He had me pee into a kidney basin ; put a strip in there and said YES, you do …the start of a new beginning .
Hey Yes, I did have a kidney transplant on May 11th. So far all is going well. I would like to be enrolled in an islet cell transplant trial within the next few months to try and protect this kidney. It’s a never-ending story, this diabetes
Thanks for checking in on me. Yes, I have been sort of quiet but I hope to soon have a big change in the works. Stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted!
I like his answer lol!!! Pass the jug please!!!
