We are still having high readings! She was 184 yesterday right before lunch and it had been about 4 1/2 hours since she had eaten or drank anything! She was 123 out of bed this morning at 7:45 AM with nothing to eat or drink since before 9:45 PM last night! I am hoping the eye doctor can give us a referal this afternoon to go to an endocrinologist! I don't know what else to do!
Hi -
Are you worried about your mother or your child? Your profile and the header don't match so I can't tell...
Maurie
Sounds like whoever it is needs more basal insulin.Waking up high, or being high between meals is indicative of not enough basal insulin. Have you done basal testing? I highly recommend you get the book Using Insulin by John Walsh so you can learn to tweak doses.
My mom is type 1 but I am concerned with my 6 yr old! She has not been diagnosed! She has been having blurred vision! Went to eye dr he said nothing wrong with eyes, wanted her to see pediatrician to have sugar checked! Her a1c was 5.4 two weeks ago! Dr said it is normal but she has had high glucose readings ranging from 130 up to 195! The high readings have been 2 hours after meals! We have been really careful making sure her hands are good a clean and use an alcohol wipe to clean the finger right before we prick it! I know these readings are high! Dr said to keep a check on it and to go to ER if glucose readings go above 200!
Ah, I see; then my responses about basal rates were way premature to the actual situation. I agree with Shawnmarie that you shouldn't panic. But I also encourage you to stand the ground and get a referral to a doctor who will take you seriously. Keep very careful records of those highs and present them to the doctor. A1C is an average for 3 months and is not necessarily indicative of her current status. Also a doctor or endo can do a OGTT and see her response to a sugary drink over two hours which will give further clarity to her status.
Your doctor's advice isn't too bad. If you check every meal and you go to the ER with the first reading above 200, your daughter will get an official diagnosis earlier than 99% of children with T1. An A1c of 5.4 and random readings below 200 aren't considered diagnostic criteria for diabetes. Random readings of 200 with symptoms (including blurry vision) are. Going to the ER with logs and that magic 200 reading will get her treatment.
Thankfully the eye doctor also felt like she needs to be seen by an endo! He will call and make the referal tomorrow! I know it may take time to get in but I do feel better knowing the eye doctor felt that she is having issues unlike the pediatrician who feels like everything is normal due to the a1c! I hope we will be getting some answers soon! Thank you for the support and the prayers for my child! It makes it easier knowing that I can ask questions or post how I feel and people can respond who know what I am dealing with!
I'm glad your eye doctor is giving her a referral. They can do c peptide and antibody testing so she will be properly diagnosed soon. If you're worried about her going into dka you can keep her on a low carb diet for now with meat and veggies.. that was what my doc told me to do when I was diagnosed but I was already in dka unfortunately.
I think you are prudent to hustle getting her to see an endo. But why do you need a referral? Is it insurance? Just call them up, tell them they have a choice, you go to the ER or you find an endo. Insurance will likely just give you authorization and then you can just go start calling endos.
And you can go to a local CVS minute clinic and get an immediate A1c test for like $30. If her A1c is high, the staff at the CVS probably "counts" as getting a referral.
She is eating small quantities! Says she is hungry but then will not eat a lot! She will only eat 1/2 of a jelly biscuit or wants 2 pieces of jelly toast with out the crust! I tried to call and make an appointment with the pediatric endo myself but the office requires a dr referal! Our insurance does not require a referal! I hope we will have answers soon!
The 4 1/2 hours before lunch on Sunday was spent getting ready, going to Sunday school and church(which was just sitting down, no running or playing, then we drove 1 hr to meet my mom to go buy school clothes! She sleeps soundly at night except to get up to uses the restroom! She dies sleep in a dark room! I have never noticed her snoring at night and I don’t think she stops breathing!
i don't believe any of the said above 'allergies, infections, snoring or sleep apnea (also not common in a 6 year old and/or a typical issue for type 1's) etc....effect a non-diabetics blood sugars. A non diabetic does not have problems with rising blood sugars - ever, they have NO issues with blood sugars as their bodies make insulin to combat any and all issues, their pancreas' works effective and efficiently to handle their needs.
please don't worry about 'DKA', she still has a very good A1C. I'm glad you'll be getting into a pediatric endo. he/she will know exactly what to do.
I am really irritated! Nurse from pediatric endo office called today and told the office assistant at the eye dr that they did not feel that my daughter needs to be seen because her a1c is normal! The eye dr office explained that she was having high readings, extreme thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurry vision with seeing spots! The nurse told her that it did not matter that the a1c was normal an that is all that they we concerned with! The only thing else that I know to do is carry her to the er but I wonder if they will do anything? I am mainly concerned with how she is going to do once school starts back with being thirsty all the time and having to go to the restroom a lot! I just wish we could get to see a endo!
Oy! You might give your daughter a high carb meal, test her one hour later, see the 200 on the meter and then follow your pediatrician's advice and go straight the ER.
I agree, if she is having these symptoms, and you get a high reading like 200, do not wait for an endo to see her or a doctor to tell you to go to the er. just go! I wish I had done that. my doctor nearly killed me by not hospitalizing me immediately after my diagnosis and I had serious, life threatening complications. I called my neighbor's endo at some point before I wound up in the hospital and they said they couldn't give me an appointment for 6 months!!!, even with symptoms of dka. They simply didn't care!
We finally have an endo appointment set up for 9/5/2013 in Atlanta! Her sugar is still all over the place anywhere from 68 to 233! Her first week of school was not so bad after all! Her teacher is really nice and understanding. My daughter and her teacher have came up with a code for when she needs to go to the restroom and she lets her go, the teacher even told her that if she has not seen her in 5 seconds to get up and go anyway! It makes me feel better that the teacher understands and is willing to work with her! Our school nurse is also diabetic so she knows first hand what to look for! She can't check my daughters sugar because she does not have a diagnosis yet but she will call me if I need to run and check it! I don't worry about it as much now! We will see what happens when we go to the endo!
i'm happy for you!!! hoping for the best!!! good luck!
That is great! Hang in there, before you know it you will have a diagnosis hopefully and better care. Have you bought ketone strips to test her urine for ketones?
We did not get a diagnosis! The endo ordered a lot of blood work that will not be back for 3 to 4 weeks! She said that she may order a ogtt depending on what the blood work shows! The endo did say that her body is not storing glucose like it should! I know they are testing for the antibodies for type 1 and she mentioned checking her thyroid! We are waiting on test results!
