What would you do?

Wow, Meee...that's scary stuff!

I was in ICU for DKA a year after diagnosis . I was a newbie on the insulin pump and I had a kink in the canula. I followed the protocol in changing out my infusion set. I changed it 3 times. Something must have been wrong with the batch of sets or I was inserting it incorrectly. It was during a major hurricane and it was a crazy time.

It is and similar stuff has happened to so many people with D while in dka, I have read stories of people being told they have the flu etc.. I can still hardly believe it when I think about it, the memories all seem like the twilight zone a bit now. I just hope I never have to stay in a hospital again due to all of this and due to things I have seen over the years. I'm sorry you went through dka too, I'm weary of pumps because of that chance and overdoses etc. A hurricane is the worst time to have something like this happen- I'm hoping we never get another one like Sandy here again. Lets just keep ourselves out of the hospitals except for blood work etc. lol

I agree! LOL

I personally had trouble with an internal medicine doctor as my pcp, she did no efforts to properly diagnose me even though I was concerned I was not a type 2 (which I'm not) and overall just didn't do much for me and kept putting that I was a type 2 and told me there was nooooooo wayyyyy I'd be a type 1 (even though I am lol) and it pretty much burned me. I found an endocrinologist that's also good as a pcp so I do only have an endocrinologist. I really wouldn't have it any other way, because I feel like he cares a lot and understands me as a patient and a diabetic (as he's also a type 1 himself) .

I hope you were able to get things correctly entered on your chart. These days, people with type 2 are being way too limited in their coverage for testing supplies. In Oregon there was a move to limit people with type 2 to 1 strip a week! The way I looked at it, what's next - peplole with type 1 getting maybe 2 strips a week? So I became involved.

Anyway my point is, that I hope you were able to get things taken care of. I can imagine that what was covered by your insurance could change and it would be even harder to get things right.

Good luck

1 strip per week??? what is even the point then? lol

Yeah. Exactly. I was notified of the push by the Oregon state commission (I believe it is called HERC) that sets the guidelines for Medicaid coverage in Oregon. I learned about it the day before their hearing. Couldn't get there. But posted here and on the ADA website and hopefully a lot of people wrote to their legislators. I got an update from Emily Coles (here) that said they had changed it somewhat, but still not enough. I guess they think it's better to pay for the medical costs of complications rather than adequate strips. Anyway, we have to keep fighting. I recall an interview here with an AIDS activist who said (and I agree) that we need to take a few pages from their playbook.

Whether or not you see her for diabetes, FIRE HER BUTT!!! She has shown a total disregard for not only the facts, but your welfare! (Not to say the least ... your feelings.)

FIRE THE WITCH!

Lois (also steamed!)

As an afterthought, do you live in the US? If so, how about a complaint to the American Medical Association? Or maybe to some state agency?

Lois

I agree artwoman, we need to be much more activist about all of these things, it's ridiculous that they even get away with all of this, starting with how much all of this costs.

I totally agree Lois, fire her first and then make a complaint.

Time for a new PCP. Alternatively, you could report her to the practice she works for (assuming she is not on her own) for poor record keeping and insist that someone from the practice sit with you and go through your record point by point to correct the errors. Time consuming, but you'd get your point across. But I wouldn't leave it as is, because in the era of electronic record-keeping, those mistakes could cause you some very serious problems if, say, you were to get into an accident and had a gallbladder rupture and the ER docs saw from your chart that you couldn't have had this problem because it says you don't have a gallbladder. :)
